Just rewatched Hughes vs. Sherk
I downloaded this fight off of UFC on Demand and I was suprised with how good the video quality was. I have seen all of Matt Hughes title defense fights besides this one and I have wanted to see this fight for a long time! It is an intregeing match-up. Well the first 2 rounds went by and i thought, "wow, another Shamrock vs. Ortiz I." Matt got take down after takedown and even won the stand up in the first 2 rounds and just pounded sherk in half gaurd. After only 2 rounds Sherk had a big gash by his eye and his face was significantly swollen. Complete domination by Hughes in the first 2 rounds. Just when I about threw it the towel and gave up in Sherk all of a sudden he comes out of no where with a takedown of his own and actually pounds away on Hughes for a whole round. This round could of almost went 10-8, sherk. I think Matt underestimated Sherks gas tank and thought he was going to just lay down for him after the first 2 rounds, but shit Sherk is a warrior. With the 4th round begining I was like, "shit, this is a fight now." - but then Matt easily dominates another round and gets to side control, then mount. Very impressive round. The 5th round was a little back in forth, but Matt gets in the drivers seat towards the end and takes round 5. This fight was very exciteing, I wouldn't call it a close fight, but a war in a sense that out of no where Sherk comes out in the 3rd round fireing out of all cylinders makeing this out to seem to be a good fight, but just too much Matt Hughes. I can't wait to see BJ vs. Sherk. I think BJ has to finish him in the first 2 rounds or Sherk will take it.

BJ penn dominated hughes when he was out of shape, now he is motivated and even has a strength and conditioning trainer living in his house. I think we will see what BJ penn is truly capable of, and this fight will be an example of that.

I haven't seen that fight in years, I should rewatch it before BJ/Sherk. Regardless of the steroid controversy, I am still a Sherk fan. I would really enjoy it if he won the title back. Good post.

Good point...I don't think it's posible to rewatch something you've never seen. Anyway, TS is right, I remember an interview with Matt in his dressing room right after the fight and he is telling Pat and Jeremy how explosive and in shape Sean was.

Quite simply, Sherk was outwrestled in that match and Hughes' size advantage played a big part in that...The bit you said about Hughes underestimating Sherk's conditioning - Whether it's true or not, i remember Rogan commenting on Hughes lack of preparation for some fights and after this he said something like "Like, before he fought Sean Sherk, i heard he only did 2 weeks of training before the fight which is just crazy"...

At Sherdog, the worst thing you can do is admit you've never seen a fight.

Every single fight we hear about this mythical "motivated Penn," it is obnoxious.
