Judo Competition question?

I have just started Judo, and am looking to do it competitively, but my master doesn't believe in competitive judo really so he doesn't know the rules. I also come from a wrestling back ground, and am much better at subbing from the ground then throwing with a gi. Would I be allowed to do a double leg to someone, just to take the match to the ground or would I have to do an actual judo throw?

You can double somebody and it will be considered a takedown but when I did that in Judo matches (coming from a wrestling background and my instructor didn't really prep me for a tournament either), you could tell that the refs weren't cool with it.

If your master doesnt believe in competitive judo the you need to find a club that does...and yes you can do a double leg in tournaments.

You can do a double leg take down, but once on the ground most refs only allow for a very short amount of ground work. If in the gaurd or another non productive position refs will stand you up after about 5 to 10 seconds.

When I took Judo and tried a double leg(depending on how you do it) I was told it wasn't a legal technique because my knee hit the ground. Also when I grabbed the belt to do a hip and leg throw(can't remember the Japanese name for it) I was told that because held the belt longer then 5 seconds it would not be valid in a tourny. Also, from talking to the Judo black belt I do Jiu-Jitsu with said that a lot of Judo schools don't teach certain techniques. An example of this would be if you shoot in for a single and you hold one leg up, you can sweep/trip the other persons leg so they land on their back or thier face. The move where they land on their face is not normally taught because if they don't land on their back then you can't get a "ippon?spell?" to win the match. The moral of the story, competition Judo has so many rules that they say are to keep the action exciting but all it ends up doing is limiting what you can do. I would suggest to BJJ comps. They don't have all those rules and if you are better at submissions then the gi throws then it would be better. Judo's ground game is actually frowned upon at most tourny's as it's felt it's not as exciting as getting the throw and as such I believe many of them have limits on how much time you can spend on the ground before the ref stands you back up. You may want to also switch to a club that practices Judo in a way that puts you in a good position for submission. If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out Dave Camarillo's style of Jiu-Jitsu:

Coming from a wrestling background, I had the same experience with judo: wierd and seemingly arbitrary rules and teacher who discouraged competition and preferred drills over all else. If you're looking to roll, judo may not be the way to go.

Yep, but if you pick your opponent up with a double leg and slam him on his back you can actually end the fight.

Ippon!
