Joe Stevenson vs BJ Penn's Takedown Defense

What's your take on Joe taking down BJ Penn for the ground and pound?
Who wins the stand up?

I don't see Joe taking BJ down but I do hope he pulls out a win somehow!!!

Love to see the fight! Hate to see it go to BJ ...

Joe's in for rough night wherever this fight ends up. BJ is hard as hell to take down, his submissions are excellent, and he has much better standup than Joe. I'm a fan so good luck to him. He may need it.

i cant see joe pulling this off anywhere, which sucks.

i would have liked to see stevenson fight another powerful lightweight like guida or griffin before he got this shot. i hope he can make the best of it though

While Stevenson is presumed to have inferior stand up striking and BJJ skills to BJ Penn, his athleticism will be a huge help in this fight. Also, fighters are constantly improving, some more than others. Stevenson may have been improving and training much harder than BJ Penn has been.

Also, i think Stevenson can take Penn down. and vice versa.

BJ's TD defense shines when someone is trying to get him down with a single leg. His balance and flexibility are unreal and allow him to really be almost impossible to take down with a traditional single, which is why if Joe is going to take him down, he's going to need to get him up against the fence and scoop him up into the air the way GSP did. If he tries to get him down with traditional wrestling TD's the way Hughes was trying to, BJ will really give Joe problems.

He can shoot in for a single or double, but if he wants to get him down, he's going to have to use the fence, get under BJ's underhooks, and look for a slam if he wants to bring the fight to the ground. Once there, I hope he is as hard on BJ as he was on Yves. The fight with Yves really showed that Joe has some VICIOUS ground and pound. He would go back like he was going to try to unhook the guard and then BAM! He slams an elbow down on your head. Really great, unrelenting GNP and if he wants to throw BJ off on the ground and keep him from working his insane positioning from off his back, he's going to have to be really hard on him while at the same time maintaining his position.

It's going to be a tough fight for Joe and he's going to need to make sure his conditioning is at its best so he can keep going at BJ for the whole 25 minutes, because one mistake against BJ and the fight can end just like that.

my bet is BJ will first rock him with punches, then GNP or submit him on the ground a la Matt hughes 1.

GSP, Hughes, Pulver, Machida, Uno came close.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic, but BJ Penn is beatable.

I think everyone here is either really overestimating BJ or underestimating Joe Daddy. Joe can cause some major damage to BJ in a lot of different ways. Dont look for this fight to be a walk in the park for BJ and EXPECT him to be on his back a few times in this fight.
