Ive never seen someone subbed with an omplata in pride/ufc?

suprising because you can transverse to an omoplata from an armbar position, triangle position, hell even off a failed kimura. Its one of the best subs out there and the only time ive ever even seen it applied is when joe riggs put one on chris lytle.

Great point! I can't think of any Pride or UFC fight where it was used. But I've seen it a few times in other orgs. There is a sweet flying umaplata I think in cagerage where some guy shot in while the other guy was half turned around. The shooter ended up with his arm in beween the guy's legs and he jumped and flipped over and landed in a mean umaplata. He tapped right away. Best one I have ever seen. BJ Penn goes for them, but I've never seen him get one in Pride or UFC. Melvin Guillard flipped out of one recently. Its just hard to sneak up on somebody with the move so they flip out and that is that. Basically, a well versed BJJ guy is really hard to catch with an Umaplata, that's why we don't see any at the Pride/UFC level. Great question though!!!

Shogun almost subbed Arona with it. I think in mma its really hard to catch someone with it. If I recall right Riggs used it to kinda sweep Lytle with it

Gil Castillo Vs. Raymond Mansfield

Someone started a thread about this like two weeks ago and there was GIF so if you research it you might find it.

Proably because its so easy to get out of, fighters don't typically put alot of power into it. I've seen it used mostly as a transitional position.

Royce subbed Akebono from an omoplata position.

Edit: Ah, sorry - that was in K-1.

Edit 2: And still slightly off-topic; here's Gil Castillo's rolling omoplata:

The omoplata is a lot harder to finish in MMA than in in sport BJJ. The gi makes a huge diference in grip and control for this sub. It is a lot easier to slip out of one in MMA. I get tapped every once in awhile by one in BJJ but have never had someone finish me when we go no gi. And I mean they same people that can pull it off with a gi can't get me without one. So I know its not a skill diference between me and another guy in no gi. Cause they always whip my ass, just not with that sub.

Ussually used as sweep. Not meant to submit (according to BJJ black belt world champion).

Can transition to triangle choke(leo viera in Pan ams 2004) easy or to take top postion and escape bottom(shogun vs arona)
Guys like Andre Galvao use it to set up the wrist lock too, and there are crucifixes and other moves that can be found from here

Nog put one on Enson in there fight then transitioned to the triangle for the win. Nog stated he let go of the Omaplata, which was tight, because he knew Enson would not tap and did not want to break his shoulder. He also knew he could transition to the triangle.

arona is an adcc champion. there's no way he would have tapped to an omaplata. it was a beautiful omaplata by shogun, but it never really looked like arona was in trouble
