Yes they know when you start downloading the stream or watching the video playback they get the IP of the user and from that they get all kinds of useful information if they want to use it. Such as where you connected from what time you connected or how many connections from that address if it is a shared IP such as from a school or business.
It is amazing what they can collect some of the funny stuff is when you go to some websites and there is a girl on the right who looks like a model and below her it says something like meet girls like Lisa from "insert your town here" Stanford Conn. You lived in Stanford your whole life and their is no girls that look anywhere nears as hot as that girl in the photo. So a little web trickery is in order by the advertiser getting your IP from where your connecting from and generating a new photo with the towns name in it.
In this case ESPN is collecting this information for advertisers and to gage interest in the show. If there is plenty of people watching the show live ESPN can go out to advertisers and pitch the show. If that happens ESPN will likely sign all of them to a one year deal with options.
