The truth is nobody should have gotten away with it after Silva. Because I can see the first time being not a big deal. Fool me once, shame on you.... fool me twice, shame on me. The saying rings true in this situation. They let their posterboy get away with illegal strikes on Lutter in a showcased fight. But it should never happen again, unless it is their intention.



Maybe this was a reason why McCarthy retired when it seemed a bit premature.

Downward elbow. If you are lying on your back and throwing an elbow then it's left to right or parallel to the ground. it is NOT downward.

the "illegal" elbows are such BS. Its pretty subjective and unclear in a lot of MMA fights.

They need to get rid of elbows to a downed opponent and allow knees. I know any rule change will take forever, and its more likely that if a change occurs it will be only to limit more strikes instead of adding any. This all takes away from the striker or non-wrestler.

Sort of.... Professional athletes do such things all the time. Micheal Irvin would push off at will because the refs allowed him to do it. Patrick Ewing and other NBA superstars knew refs would allow them to travel all over the court. And so they continued to do it.

Their are thousands of examples. But like I said, MMA is different in many cases. Referees are in charge of protecting a fighter from serious harm, especially from illegal strikes.


Do Silva and Florian go in with a plan to deliver illegal strikes. I doubt it. I figure they are conscious of what they are doing though. Both were aware they might be in trouble getting mounted and they used illegal strikes to escape. Which is part of the equation. Problem is that they were allowed to perform illegal actions. I don't blame Silva or Florian. It's not their job to referee.

Plenty of guys do illegal things to escape dangerous situations. The Tito/Rashad fight is another example.
