i don't think you should be considered a striker if your afraid to strike

After watching the riggs/swick fight i have decided i am tired of these fighters constantly sayin they are strikers and want to bang; when in fact they only want to do so when they can or will dominate that aspect of the game.

I know this is not boxing and u don't have to trade, but for christ sakes; if u feel ur a competent, skilled striker, then why the hell do u have to shoot the min u take a hard shot. Is ur chin that weak...or are ur tech abilities so subpar that you have to immediately go to grappling.

Riggs took one hard kick and instantaneously shot in for the takedown, smart strategy; no not considering the guilliotine we have seen mike used on many occassions and considering riggs rather avg wrestling/submission.

How the hell do you say ur a solid or great striker and then be so damn scared to engage, an it's not just him; there are sooo many fighters who say they are strikers and show no sort of acumen in def/counters/footwork or off. An on top of that show little to no heart in regards to taking a strike or coming back from a poor position. Im not saying strikers can't or shouldn't grapple; but if ur a striker shouldn't u show some more skills and ability to def/take/recover from strikes other than to shoot. At least clinch and work hooks/uppercut/ knees....

You don't see hughes trying to stay away from the ground, or yoshida or nog or sak; they are all wrestlers/grapplers who are confident on the ground and won't shy away from keeping the fight there, even if they are getting put in bad situations they work their way out and win...hell even fedor did it against nog. All these guys are fairly well rounded, but they don't run from their area of strength, just because of a few bad moments..feel me.

There are few guys who i take seriously when they say they can and will strike: pulver/edwards/baroni/sylvia/arvloski, these guys use takedowns gnp; but they are not scared or over anxious to bring it to the ground just cus of a few rough spots.

what do u think

Well obviously when these guys are put into a bad situation they are going to do everything they can to turn it in their favor. For example, I don't think Riggs was being a pussy for taking a shot. He was doing the smart thing. Even if he wanted to stand up and trade with Swick I am willing to bet winning the fight was his highest priority at the moment. Even though he ended up losing the fight taking it to the ground while rocked is a better idea than striking while rocked.

Yeah I've seen good strikers come out with some jabs and leg kicks in the opening minutes to try to feel out the other guy. I don't know what was up with those guys.
