How come no one ever properly tries to defend the RNC?

Once a rear naked choke is sunk, it's very hard to defend. But the proper defense is to tighten your neck and reach for the top hand and try to pull it off your head.

But you very, very rarely see guys attempt this. Granted, a good RNC is hard to defend, but you think they would at least TRY.

You never see guys trying to pull the top hand off.

How come?

Maybe if your opponents are BJJ phenoms (Terrell and Lutter), it's a bit hard to defend. Plus the RNC is usually setup so it's not like you can just expect a RNC. A good couple of punches from the back will soften up the opponent for a RNC.

This is true. But you hardly even ever see them REACH for the top hand. Maybe panic?

You'd be surprised at how effective it is if u just TRY.

Someone who did try and was often very successful was in TUF when Josh Haynes fought Bisping.

its alot diffrent when you have to guard against strikes and the choke vs. just guarding the choke.

Hmmm, you might want to ask someone high up in BJJ then. I mean, If its sunk in is it pretty much a waste of energy? Hughes didnt bother to pull the arm from Penn when he sunk it in

Also, the RNC in Terrell/Smith, I feel isnt fair and that win (im a fan of terrell) since it was a clean break and Terrell took advantage of it.

Not too sure I think most guys just enter panic mode, not like they're scared they just forget basic things... although David Loiseau had a good RNC defense against Tanner.

Ummm, Hughes vs. Trigg II comes to mind. The real proper defense is to control a wrist and escape the position, I see this done quite often.

For the same reason that no one repeatedly bucks their hips when they're mounted and taking shots.

In other words, I have NO idea.
