I was thinking of posting exactly the same thing. Look at the upsets that have occurred this year. They've been (for the most part) people winning by doing something that they normally wouldn't. Serra knocking someone out? Couture hitting Sylvia with that big overhand right? Gonzaga with a HK?!? Come on. So maybe it's not so much the upset factor, as it is guys coming in with skills they haven't had before to get the job done. Unfortunately, there are only so many ways you can win, and after they've exhausted all their "surprises", how do they win? Oddly enough, the answer is Fedor. He brings it all, you have to be ready for it all, you know EXACTLY what he's going to do, and he still wins.
Soo, the problem is that how many times can you surprise someone with a HK? Or that your striking ability has DRAMATICALLY improved (Serra)? You don't think Matt Hughes is already training for his stand up (or at least, stand up defense)? You think Randy will be watching for that HK?
But, I think you have a very good point. Maybe this is the next major step in MMA?
