Well I'm not saying martial arts are less effective, but you have to get punches and kicks off, and if someone is pressing you thats not gonna happen, simple as that, its just gonna take a while for martial artists to figure out a way to adapt. It'll happen, just gonna take time. Even now striking in MMA is differnt than boxing, kick boxing, karate, etc. Its a hybrid of all, I mean hell last I knew hammer fists werent being taught to boxers or karate guys but they sure are effective in the mount.

im pretty sure your speaking just of asian martial arts, which often have spiritual/religious ties. i think if you look at MA arts more broadly, some of the expectations you have about how fighters behave are less realistic.

one of the interesting things about MMA is that it has exposed many MA as more or less useless in a real fight (kung fu is one of them, aside from certain styles, sanshou being the obvious exception right now). aside from the kicks, TKD is also one of them. in many ways it has become an americanized MA where they simply give out belts without regard to true mastery of skills. i used to take it, and id say this is exactly true.

other martial arts like grecco roman wrestling, sambo, and wrestling have flourished because of their effectiveness. i think the problem is you just dont perceive them as being martial arts, which is the main mistake.

Honor and all that bushido is most heavily propagated by guys who practiced ineffective arts as a way to justify avoiding conflicts imo.

So anyone looking to avoid a fight, rather then ripping off his Affliction T-shirt that he bought at the local McDojo at the slightest sign of provocation, flexing the barbed wire tatted arms, yelling about how he aint no bitch, I guess that makes that guy a pussy, right? Stockton in the house!!

The TMA's can be successful in MMA if it has the following:

1.) Full contact training -- If you earn your blackbelt in Aikido and have never even been hit or had a full contact spar, than I'm sorry your nothing but a white belt. It is impossible to have good technique without going full speed at somepoint.

2.) Takedown defense -- This is obvious. Having CroCop like Takedown defence would make Cung Le feel like he's in K-1 again.

3.) Ground game -- Even Chuck Liddell gets taken down. You don't want to wind up like those Hapkido instructors in Rickson's videos.

Keeping in mind GSP has integrated TMA's into his MMA skillset very effectively

You are applying the code of budo to the broader term of martial arts, which is an all too common cultural mistake, in my opinion.

This code of honor that people bandy about in the martial arts world stems from the concept of budo from Japan. The traditional samurai concept that most people hold is very similar to that of the American cowboy. Both are abstract figures that have been used as symbols to embody certain traits prized by the culture of origin. The samurai symbolizes warrior spirit, selflessness, and striving for perfection in the undertaking of any task. Likewise, the cowboy symbolizes independence, toughness, and pioneering spirit.

To take a cultural meme from a very specific setting that only actually applies to a handful of martial arts, and attempt to apply it to every fighting style from around the world is really a distorted way of looking at martial arts.

i don't believe TMA is dead because it's the first and basic step of self defense but this time is for real effectiveness,kung-fu would not work in real life fighting.

but TMA is not really dead.
