GSP says the game has passed by old-timer Hughes

I wouldn't consider GSP was dissing Hughes he was just defending his statement that Fitch was the toughest fight of his career.

He's right, Fitch is a new breed of fighter (much like GSP) and different from those like Hughes and his ilk. Fitch is athletic and dangerous everywhere as a result of MMA's evolutionary process where Hughes was able to set a legacy using his particular strengths at a period when it was the norm in MMA to specialize in one style and well-rounded fighters were considered "jack of all trades, masters of none" and thus not as successful yet.

Unfortunately, I have to say that if Hughes isn't done, he is close too it. Age doesn't make him obsolete, his lack of preperation does.

i think the game has passed matt hughes by. he just doesnt think he has to do anything else but to rely on what got him to where he was all those years. the game has changed and if he doesnt say bye bye

Take him down and pound him out. At the very least, I think he could just get a LnP victory. Hughes is a better wrestler than Fitch.

The problem with Hughes is that he has failed to come to the realization that he can't simply rely on his wrestling ability anymore. He used to dominate the division as a result of this and could then dabble in BJJ and striking. Now he's facing well-rounded guys who are even surpassing him in wrestling. He seems at a loss as to what to do next which appears to be frustrating him greatly and resulting in him losing.

I think its too quick to write Matt Hughes off.

He got beat by GSP and Thiago - we've seen more stellar comebacks, from lesser fighters.

And lets not forget Hughes TKO'd BJ Penn in their last fight.

He will probably rick-roll Matt Serra, and you will all be back on his dick again for the third BJ Penn / Matt Hughes fight.

I still think Matt Hughes is the most unglorious MMA fighter every to win a title in the UFC. I've been around the guy on a number of social occasions. He's the classic bully-type... arrogant, little man complex.

The only good thing I can say about Hughes is that he was the most dominant 170lb champ ever. At one point he was unstoppable.

There is plenty of dirt out there about Hughes and Miletich Fights Systems in general.
