The Gracies decided on the Cage

That's right. The family most known for it's grappling thought the cage would be a better way to contain the figters. The Gracies went with a cage because they knew a ring can cause the fighters to fall out. They chose a cage because ring had already proven to be a hassel for grapplers.

The Gacies, the first family of Jui Jitzu, went with a cage.

Who are we to second guess them?

The Gracies FOUGHT in a RING for the majority of their COLLECTIVE careers, in BRAZIL. As they have in Brazil for the past 80 years. So the Brazilian people choose the Ring.

The only reason the Gracies came up with the cage was because they were coming to America and wanted to promote the UFC in a certain light, ie, a no-holds barred, anything goes, two-men-enter-one-man-leaves, locked in a steel cage bloodbath.

Thats why the Gracies chose the cage. So guys couldnt "escape." It made it more shocking and extreme. No other reason whatsoever.

We are fans who have been able to witness the sport grow a lot since then.

Regardless I think the cage is better because it keeps the fighters in better. There is no escape.

I' sure if the Gracies prmoted an evnt in Brazil they would have gone with a cage. The UFC was the first event they promoted. They fought in the Vale Tudo ring foryears, yes. Obviously they didn't like it too much.

As long as the sport is evolving, its all good in a ring in a cage or in the grass.

It seems more likely they chose the cage as an improvement over the ring. They had a fresh start and could choose whatever they wanted. The Gracies wanted to have a legitimate competition not a bloodsport. Rorion and Helio talked about this a little bit at the end of UFC 1 I believe. It was Helio's dream to create a competition like the UFC.

Pride is dead. Get over it.

Oh, wait, this isn't a "Bring back the Pride ring" thread. What a change of pace.
