This is a interview with G.G for the Spanish magazine Cinturon Negro translated from Spanish.
It’s a bit old but still tells much new about the man and fighter GG is today and his upcoming fight whit Werdum.
Hope you’ll enjoy it (and understand the translation)
Just when everybody thought the jiu-jitsu black belt will be another victim of the high kicks Mirko is famous for, just the opposite happened: after taking Mirko down and punishing him with elbows, Napao left the entire MMA world mute, finishing Mirko whit his own favourite weapon, a high kick.
This victory gave a new direction to Gonzagas carrier and after beating the HW no.2 of the world he now gets the chance to fight UFC champion Randy Couture.
The next page is dedicated to this new idol of the MMA world.
Cinturón Negro:
What was it like for you to enter the octagon as a looser (that’s what most thought, that he didn’t have a chance) and leave as the winner in the CroCop fight?
Gabriel Gonzaga:
The public that didn’t know me considered me the looser, but for my team, my friends and trainers I was the secret favourite of the fight, and some of them made a lots of money betting on me.
To win a fight is great, but to win it just as you planed, following the plan from the beginning until the end is a confirmation that you are on the right track!
Cinturón Negro:
Did you expect to knock him out?
Gabriel Gonzaga:
I was ready for everything, never before I made such a good preparation for a fight, I was ready to fight 10 five minute rounds if necessary.
I worked a lot on my stand up here in Ludlow and I noticed a big evolution of my skills.
I always knew that I have talent but you know how difficult the things are here in Brazil.
Cinturón Negro:
Moving to the U.S made you a better stand up fighter , and a better fighter in total?
Gabriel Gonzaga:
Moving here made everything better. My stand up, my wrestling, my fisics…Here I have a proper training whit only one goal: to be the UFC champion. My team pushes me to my limits and gives me a lot of motivation, and the results are here. Soon you will here a lot about Team Link, since a few of our fighters are cut out to be on top for a long time. Ricardo Funch and Karn Gregorian are impressive: 3 fights, 3 knock outs each.
Cinturón Negro:
Back to the CroCop fight: When the referee stud you up, while you where in a dominating position and active, what did you think?
Gabriel Gonzaga:
I thought that I was in the fight and active enough, that I never stopped to attack, but when Herb gave the order to stand up I didn’t need too much time to continue whit my stand up game plane.
Herb is a excellent professional and we need to respect his decision.
C.N.:
What do you think about the Randy fight? What will be your game plane?
G.G:
Randy is a role model for all of us, he really proved himself as a great fighter.
It will be a honour for me too fight him for the title.
But all that respect I feel for him will not take away my hunger to win, im going to enter the fight with a determination never seen and I want this title more than anybody else.
As far as the game plane, Team link is working on it.
C.N.:
Do you plan to continue fighting in Jiu-Jitsu? Will we see you at the World Cup?
G.G.:
For sure, Jiu-Jitsu is like my blood, I love to fight in the kimono and I ll take my students too. Today I don’t think about the money no more and I can dedicate my time to my students and training.
C.N.
What have you achieved in Jiu-Jitsu so far? Did you ever think about leaving the sport?
G.G.:
I was the state champion, Brazil champion, world champion… but I think Jiu-Jitsu is more than a few titles and Real (Brazilian currency) to me.
My big achievement in Jiu-Jitsu was the forming of my character, because I started as a very young man and with good examples it helped me to be the man I am now, a man that maintains he’s family with dignity.
C.N.:
Who is your idol and who do you look up to?
G.G:
My idol is Rickson Gracie, since I as a child watched him representing our art like nobody else. I look up to everybody who has something good in our about him and I try to make my way learning from them.
C.N.:
What changed in your life after the CroCop fight?
G.G.:
That fight whit Mirko was an before and after in my career. When Mirko signed whit the UFC me and Marco started to work on that fight to happen. When it was signed we created a 3 months project, and it was pure sacrifice, total dedication and discipline, since it would have been a big jump for my career in case I was victories, for all Mirko stands for and means for this sport.
After the victory many doors opened, my popularity is bigger, but I am the same guy like before.
Now I pay more attention to my interviews and how I beehive, since I want to give a good example to everybody.
C.N.:
Would you like a rematch with Werdum and what do you think about a fight whit Minotauro?
G.G..
The first fight whit Werdum took place when we where inexperienced, but still we brought up a great fight, and proved our selves as warriors. Now we are better athletes and more experienced.
I think if the UFC is interested in that fight, the audience will want to see it and it will be a pleasure for me to fight him again.
A fight with Minotauro would be great too, but that depends on the UFC and Im more than happy to fight any professional the UFC puts in my way.
