GIVE SERRA HIS RESPECT!!! + WW random thoughts

Last night, I didn't think serra had a chance against GSP...then I heard something about GSP wanting to sub serra, then I thought, if it goes to the ground, serra has a solid chance, because his submission skills are better.

I was shocked when serra was outboxing GSP- arguably the best striker in his division- at least from a technical perspective. I called it from the first exchange- serra's form, his movements, it was all so much better than GSP's...he won almost every single exchange. GSP has great legs, and his hands are good, but he treats MMA almost like a karate point tournament...Serra would go for the openings, and hit hard- making every punch count.

Serra was incredible- and he deserved to win. I went back and watched his fight with BJ Penn for the first time...and had I seen that fight, I never would have considered him such an underdog.

Serra is no joke, and I"m happy that he's getting his chance to shine.

As for GSP- he is NOT overrated. Not in the least- GSP is the f'n man, and hopefully he'll be back full steam. He just needs to adjust his strategy- he's young, and i've always said GSP's biggest weakness is his lack of experience. That's why I like Hughes so much- apart from his arrogance blinding him in his fight with GSP, Hughes always has a rock solid gameplan.

As for Koscheck/diego...diego had better boxing skills that night. HOWEVER, Koscheck had the perfect strategy, and didn't BOX diego, he just kept his distance and punched him, not really engaging him. Respect to Kos, I underrated him.

Now we've got serra + koscheck + sanchez + hughes + GSP + karo paysian. this are going to get interesting in the welterweight division

Serra gets all the respect in the world.

He went out and won that fight, hands down.

I'm sure that he will not take it for granted either. He is going to enjoy every minute of this, and he should.

Props to Serra. He had the right mindset and came out and won fair & square.

GSP was dizzied by the shot to the side of the back of his head.

Just a physiological reaction, doesn't mean he was "hurt". Where the shot lands has a lot to do with it, and it looked like after the one grazing shot, GSP had no sense of balance any more.

Serra capitalized, but it was such a fluke (no one gets hit to the back of the head standing, its always little shots to the back of the head when they are on the ground) that GSP should definitely get the first crack at Serra as champ!

This is what happens when one guy doesn't have a lot to gain, and the other has NOTHING TO LOSE. Serra fought like it, but I need to see that match again before I can say Serra is the better fighter.

Props to Serra for the fight and his class before and after - the comment to Rogan and Dana about the humble pie was funny.

Did anyone else think GSP could have used the Muay Thai clinch effectively against Serra given the height, reach and strength advantage. I think he could have neutralized Serra and kneed him from the clinch. The WW soap opera just got more interesting...

He deserves every bit of respect for completly destroying "the future" of the WW division. I'm sure he trained his ass off for this fight and it paid off for him. So props to him.

Mad respect for Serra and his skills and if he has to fight Hughes next I hope he wipes the smirk off his face but most likely he will face Kos.

Just imagine for a second Kos being the first TUF world champion. It makes me shudder.

BTW I can't believe what happened last night. GSP will be back.

Diego should have gone for clinches and takedowns. Even if Kos stuffed, he would have scored aggression points like vs. Alessio.

It was so dumb of him to stand and trade even when it was clear he was the inferior striker. A submission grappler should get the fight down at all costs.

I was rooting for Serra, but I never would have expected him to win in that fashion. I figured that in order for him to win he would have to get it on the mat some how and catch GSP in a submission.

Serra is the man right now and I couldn't be more happy for him. He has to be on cloud nine.

BTW, this is how I see the WW top five as of right now.

1. Serra
2. St. Pierre
3. Hughes
4. Koscheck
5. Sanchez

IMHO

losing b/c of being hurt, and losing b/c of being dizzied mean the same thing in MMA. If somebody who's like 4-5 inches shorter than you is able to punch the back of your head, he gets credit. Besides, it wasn't just that shot- EVERY SINGLE EXCHANGE was serra- that's what shocked me. GSP would get off a bunch of "feeler" lefts and rights while Serra would hit some heavy body shots everytime- which is brilliant b/c of him having heavy hands, and being much shorter
