Featherweight division in UFC?

Anyone think that the UFC will eventually create a featherweight division?

They have a number of smaller LWs and there are a lot of guys fighting at 143 out there that are UFC worthy.

At this point, I'd say it's unlikely that they do anything like that for quite some time, but with all these shows that they're doing now, who knows?

Thoughts?

I saw this in a thread a month or so ago.

The general consensus was that they have too much going on right now, especially w/ the lightweight division opening up. PPV's only getting 1-2 fights per division as it is. It would make it difficult to get fan favorites if they only fight once every 6 months.

i like the idea of bringing in featherweights, but i'd like to see them get the lightweights going first by signing some talent and getting a champ. after they get the lightweights completely squared away, id like to see them try and fix the mess that is the hw division. if they choose to leave the hw alone, id love to see them establish the featherweights with guys like hominick and faber.

You only need to look at how long they disregarded the LW devision to know how unlinkely they are to have one any lower.

Nice idea but there is not even order in the lightweight division yet. If this were to happen the sport would need to keep the current expansion rate and it would still take a couple years though.

If they do, then we can see what Riggs looks like at 145 lbs.

Collegiate wrestling does down to 103 (Boxing Strawweights are 106) The UFC uses the same naming conventions as boxing but for different weights. So a Featherweight in the UFC would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 145lbs? That’s about Boxing’s Welterweight Division, a very deep division historically.
