What you need to custom-build a UFC champ
By JOSE RODRIGUEZ, MANAGING EDITOR
The beauty of mixed-martial arts is that it isn't only about a fighter's fists or chin. Unlike other bloodsports, MMA is a whole-body experience.
So, with that in mind, I'd like to take this opportunity to build the perfect Ultimate Fighting Championship warrior.
Again, this Frankenstein experiment is far from scientific and it's sure to spark some debate over whether this writer hit the mark or missed by a mile.
Anyways, here goes...
FISTS: Chuck Liddell's. Doesn't matter where the Iceman punches from, it tends to land on the button. There are plenty of groggy noggins out there that can attest to that.
CHIN: World heavyweight champ Tim Sylvia has yet to be knocked out in 24 fights as a pro. It could be that many fighters need a ladder to land one on the kisser of the 6 ft.-8-ins., 260- lbs. giant. He has, though, taken some doozies. But after shaking off the cobwebs, has usually comes back to win the fight.
ELBOWS: Canadian David Loiseau takes this one. The Crow, who lost his middleweight title fight with Rich Franklin in March, throws some of the nastiest elbows in the business. Though, after watching Tito Ortiz feed Ken Shamrock in UFC61, Loiseau may be in danger of losing the honour.
LEGS: This is a tough one. There are plenty of guys in the UFC with quick and powerful kicks but not one that stands out in my mind as an obvious winner. So I'll give this one to Rick Franklin.
MOUTH: Though most UFC fighters tend to shy away from trash talking, Tito Ortiz is someone who seems to thrive on it. Remember, this is the guy who gets special T-shirts made taunting the opponent he's just beaten. When it comes to mega-mouths, Tito is in a league of his own, with welterweight Nick Diaz trailing a distant second.
BRAIN: It's not just about the muscles and the limbs. An even keel and a solid strategy make good fighters into champs. This one's a tie. UFC hall-of-famer Randy Couture is one of the nicest men on the planet with a solid but not overwhelming glow of peace and positive energy. Even in losing, there isn't a fighter who's more gracious. The other guy who fits this mould is Canadian Georges St. Pierre. A king of the please and thank-yous until he gets in the ring.
Then, there's technique...
GROUNDANDPOUND: Matt Hughes. The former collegiate wrestler has mastered his own form of ground and pound that no one in the business has yet to match.
SUBMISSION: I gotta go old school when talking about submissions. I'll take legendary limb-twister Royce Gracie circa the mid 1990s. As far as some of the new guys go, Renato 'Babalu' Sobral has won his last five fights by submission.
INTIMIDATION: Yes, the sheer fear factor. Hands down, Jeff 'The Snowman' Monson. He kinda looks like a mix between the Michelin Man and Mr. Clean after a drunken sailor's shore leave at a tattoo parlour.
ENDURANCE: Jeremy Horn. At age 30, this guy's already got 96 pro fights under his belt. Enough said.
"Enough said." Thank god. Cmon Rich Franklin's legs? wtf??? Royce's subs.. who has he subbed besides some bums with no knowledge in submissions and Ken Shamrock? And eventhough the writer was a bit biased towards UFC yeah but there's still guys like Dean Lister in their roster. He would own Royce in grappling. No disrespect to Royce, I like the guy and all but these are cold facts. Then there's Tim Sylvia's chin. It's really good no question but what about Mark Hunt? He eats CroCop's lhk's for breakfast and just farts afterwards.
But these are just my thoughts and there are some good picks also like Matt Hughes for GnP (maybe Fedor would be better but..), Titos mouth is a good pick... and so on.
Omg, just noticed he's pick for legs was RicK Franklin, maybe we haven't heard about him or seen him in action? lol
