Evan TannerEvan Tanner (32-6 MMA, 11-4 UFC) has been added to a UFC card in September according to UFCjunkie.com sources inside Tanner’s camp at Chute Boxe USA. Potential targets in September would be UFC 75 which is scheduled for Sept. 8, 2007 in London, England, or UFC 76 which is scheduled for Sept. 22, 2007 in Anaheim, California.
A posting on Chute Boxe USA’s website confirms that Tanner will be fighting for the UFC in September and shows some pictures of Tanner training.
Evan Tanner is a veteran of Pancrase and shoot fighting and has had a long and prestigious UFC career to date. Tanner made his UFC debut way back at UFC 18 in January 1999 as a light heavyweight, and won his first three fights. Tanner then was given a title shot against then-light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz at UFC 30. In this fight Tanner would suffer his first career UFC loss in just 32 seconds after being knocked unconscious by a big slam from Ortiz.
Tanner would return to win three more fights in the UFC at light heavyweight before losing to Rich Franklin in Franklin’s UFC debut (Franklin initially fought in the UFC at light heavyweight). After the fight against Franklin, Tanner decided to drop down to fight at Middleweight, and won three fights there - defeating Phil Baroni twice at UFC 45 and UFC 48, and defeating Robbie Lawler at UFC 50 - before being awarded a shot at the vacant UFC Middleweight Championship against David Terrell at UFC 51 in February 2005. Tanner came in to the fight as an underdog but defeated Terrell by strikes in the first round and became the first UFC Middleweight Champion since Murilo Bustamante held the title before leaving the UFC for PRIDE in 2002.
Tanner’s first defense of the middleweight belt was at UFC 53 where he rematched against Rich Franklin. Like Tanner, Franklin had also dropped down from light heavyweight to middleweight. The fight was a war but ultimately Franklin was victorious, winning the title via a doctor’s stoppage in the fourth round. Tanner then faced David Loiseau at UFC Fight Night 2 in October 2005 and was generally regarded to be winning the fight before Loiseau’s dangerous elbows opened a cut which ended the fight as a loss for Tanner. Tanner then returned to the octagon at UFC 59 in April 2006 where he submitted Justin Levens via triangle choke in the first round.
