I agree with your assessment on this, it is utter shit. MMA is getting more media coverage and being "accepted" as a main stream sport. For those who still think it isn't a sport or still use the decade old (and erroneous) analogy of "human conckfighting", they shouldn't even be allowed to speak on the matter. However with this new exposure we get more people who are uneducated about the sport and more foten than not, those people are the ones with the ability to speak in the media about it.
For example, I was watching ESPN one night before UFC 71 and they were showing the weigh ins for the main event and you could hear the sarcasm dripping off the voice of the announcer, I think it was John Anderson, and to top it off he said it almost wants you to see a rematch of "Goose versus Ice" (Top Gun). While I can always appreciate a witty comment this one struck a nerve. And it is apparent in most of the coverage of MMA in the major media outlets.
Its a grudging coverage, like they want to diss it every chance they can but they don't want to be the only ones not covering it. So they throw it up on the screen and write articles about how much of a let down it is and how violent it is blah blah blah. It is frustrating because MMA is really a great, exciting and growing sport. They seem like they want to cut it off at the knees.
