Donald Cerrone interview on today's Sherdog Radio program comments on Varner fight

I listened to the Sherdog Radio interview on Donald Cerrone today and jotted down the following notes.

Cerrone said "he poked me in my eyeball" - Varner would have called for a timeout or spit out his mouthpiece to stall for time. Not my opinion...we've seen him do this when injured in prior fights...(Franca, McCullough and now Cerrone).

"We both know he (Varner) was rising when i threw the knee". Cerrone said Varner was positioning to try a takedown when the knee was launched.

"I thought i missed him with the knee...it didn't feel like I connected at all". So much for impact...Cerrone thought he whiffed...

"I felt if the fight kept going that i could have broken him down bigtime...he was gone". Cerrone indicated that he was going to let it all hang out (through the final round).

Cerrone wasn't defending the takedown because he was too comfortable (and confident) in the guard...he realizes this was a mistake and will make the correction for future fights.

Cerrone said he wasn't throwing kicks from his right leg (because his right calf was injured) and had not sparred in training because his hand was still injured from the McCullough fight.

"In the standup i was stalking him the whole time..."

He also said that Varner doesn't have exceptional punching power and Leonard Garcia hits much harder.

Anyone, anytime, anywhere attitude - completely opposite from KJ Noons who wouldn't give Nick Diaz a rematch after their fight was stopped because of a cut.

Cerrone indicated that he wants the Varner rematch and also is up for fighting McCullough again but also; "I'd love to fight Eddie Alvarez because he's an amazing fighter and he always brings it".

After watching Cerrone fight through the eye poke in the 3rd and continue to move forward there's no questioning his heart. The kid loves to fight and prefers to test himself against the most dangerous fighters in his division.

I'm looking forward to the rematch.

hes a great fighter and can take a punch but i think it will be years before he will really shine.he has to get over his gung ho style if he wants to win.but against other gung ho fighters i think his chances are good.

Varner is kind of a bitch who is good at fighting. Not that i could take pain any better, but he was still dominating that fight.

Thats a dumb post....then how do you explain the success of fighters like Diego Sanchez or St.Pierre?they are gun ho or how ever you want to put it......And Cerrone is the man i really dont see any real challenges for him in WEC Varner was acting thats my opinion

Cowboy won two rounds clearly and almost finished him at the end of the second. Cowboy has almost a machida esc style to him where he hunts you a bit but then gos all out as machida picks his shots. Cowboy is very entertaining and i like him a lot!

it's true he lost the fight because he was too willing to play guard. not just from a points perspective, but he got his face smashed.

If his performance in the McCollugh fight didn't win you over, his clash with Varner definitely should have,
