Diego Sanchez urine test after fight = BLOOD!!!

On ufc's official website there is a link to an article about diego sanchez preperation and fight with karo and after the fight the writer sais :

"Sanchez puts the cup on the table and the stragglers laugh. It looks more like fruit punch than lemonade. Jackson says bloody urine is typical after a fight. "

My question is why would there be blood in your urine after a fight? high blood pressure could cause some traces of blood in semen but not in urine! Anyone have a medical explanation of why that would happen cause this is the first time i hear about this!

Why? Shots to the kidney and liver.

The correct medical term is gross hematuria (bloody urine). This can occur with trauma to a kidney (not liver). No treatment is typically needed.

Mainly kidney damage, as stated by other poster.

I have seen a ruptured spleen with the same effect, but with trauma it could have easily been caused by kidney damage.

So no liver though?

Muscle damage from a fight and extreme dehydration for cutting weight can lead to rhabdomyolysis which can manifest into red-urine (not blood, but myoglobin from inside the muscle cells). Actual blood can indeed be caused by direct trauma to kidneys. This is never a good thing, but not infrequent in MMA, especially after 3 tough rounds like in his fight against Karo.

keep in mind he was being tossed around the ring alot of times with alot of force. that would do it to anybody. Except Jean-Claude Van Damme, of course...
