Couture says he will come out of retirement if the circumstances are right

http://www.knoxnews.com/kns/other_sp...894330,00.html

"Couture knows how to pick his battles
By STEPHEN C. SMITH, SR.
August 5, 2006

Funny thing about being in the military - once you've been a part of it, you don't look back on the experience as just some job you had - it's a part of who you are.
So when Ultimate Fighting Championship Hall of Famer Randy Couture flashed back to his days in uniform during his visit here last week, his stock among desert-residing UFC fans shot up even further.

"I used to be in the military myself," Couture said. "I spent some time in the Army and I really appreciate what you guys are doing over here. It means a lot to all of us and coming over here to see you all is the least we can do."

Couture, who appeared along with middleweight champion Rich Franklin and UFC All-Access host Rachelle Leah, still straddles the line between his military and wrestling backgrounds - pairing a military-style buzz-cut with and a wrestler's cauliflower ears.

To him, both are badges of honor.

Though now comfortably ensconced at the UFC broadcast table, the 42-year-old former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion hasn't completely ruled out a return to the octagon for the right opponent.

But, in a sport that doesn't have any old-timer's days - Couture has to weigh his options carefully.

"I'm not going to come out of retirement to fight just anybody," he said. "The circumstances have to be right in order for me to do that.

Knowing how and when to pick your battles? Sounds like a military man to me.

He probably does not want to fight Chuck again, but he might fight Silva.

Couture was ruined by becoming Mr. Celebrity and will only be effective again if he returns to Gresham.

He should fight another seasoned vet like Bas.

Couture still looks the part, but his reflexes have obviously declined big time. I could see him fighting Shamrock or someone along those lines, but his days against top competition are behind him IMO. Sure he could probably beat a lot guys in the UFC, but him beating up TUF guys and what not isn't what they'd want and he's been through a who's who of everybody else on the roster. Couture knew when to get out and as a fan of his, I appreciate that. 99% of fighters would have milked their name for 3-4 more fights and went out on a sour note, but Couture fought the champ, lost, and bowed out. Perfect ending, leave it at that!

I'm wondering if its a money thing? Not that I would rag him for it if it was. I don't see him wanting to fight Silva, thats some bad for your health kinda stuff. I could see him trying to fight an older guy like Bas or something but not any wide eyed bushy tailed young guns. Man I would love to see Randy put it down one more time.

couture was just as good in his last fights as he always was, chuck just has gotten better and is the worst opponent for randy. He has great angles, hits hard, and is impossible to keep down. Thats why couture lost. I can see couture beating silva just like he beat belfort.
