Couture on cover of Sports Illustrated

This was posted on NBC's site:

Couture to appear on SI cover
By Mike Chiappetta

At what point does a sport go mainstream? How about when it's best-known fighter graces the cover of the nation's best-known sports magazine?

Randy Couture, the only five-time champion in UFC history, will appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine at a later date this summer.

SI writer L. Jon Wertheim, a 10-year veteran of the magazine, penned the piece which will dig into the life of the most famous MMA star in the U.S. Couture recently regained the UFC heavyweight championship at the age of 43 years old, defeating Tim Sylvia at UFC 68. The win catapulted him even further into mainstream sports fame, as he appeared on ESPN's "Hot List" following the victory.

I'm not a big fan of SI, but it's nice to see the positive coverage of MMA athletes (and the sport in general). I would guess they will be talking about Couture's new Injured GI Foundation as well.

Kudos to Randy. There couldn't be a better ambassador for the sport. He's total class, and this is a great honor.

Good for Randy!! Also good for the sport. IMHO nobody deserves it more then Randy Couture. Sure Fedor also deserves it but it IS an American magazine and Randy does fight for an American organization.

I doubt Matt Serra will ever grace the cover, unless of course he beats Hughes (doubtful) and repeats an upset of GSP (more doubtful). I wasn't aware Chuck was ever on the cover, then again, I haven't read SI since my subscription ran out a few years back.

Does that mean that Couture getting an SI cover doesn't mean anything? If I'm not mistaken SI has been around much longer and has a much larger fanbase then ESPNs magazine.

being on the cover of SI is a much bigger deal than being on the cover of ESPN the magazine.

I just stated a fact, golly. The 2 biggest fighters on the 2 biggest sports mag covers. MMA is getting some coverage. Why do people always want to start debates?

It wasn't intended to start a debate. Your post said "Chuck was already on Espn cover". Sounds to me like you're trying to take away from Randy being on SI. Try wording your post a little better next time.
