Could the UFC's Lawsuits hurt the UFC?

Lately Dana white has been suing left and right in terms of trademark... and so on... lately it's been about use of the Octagon... and one thing I've noticed is that some venues are going to the ring as opposed to the cage... could this hurt the UFC? And possibly open a pandora's box that the UFC wouldn't be able to close and possibly open the doorway to pride in america? Thoughts plz

Is it true that California rules state basically you have to use a cage? If so, is the UFC going to sue everyone who uses one? That sounds like a monopoly.

It's not Dana suing, it's Zuffa lawyers who know exactly what to do to protect the brand. Anytime any company infringes on any other companies trademarks there will likely be a law suit.

The trademarks will not encourage others to use a ring. There are still tons of cage designs available and considering all forms of combat arts rely on circular movements, only retards think it's better to fight in a square. I think (hope) we start to see more rounded cage enclosures.

yo i could be mistaken, but i believe that the latest law suit was not necissarily around the specific use of the cage, rather the terms and expressions used in the advertising of the event. Dana white won't sue every event using a cage, but will go after every subprime event who chooses to sell tickets to fans by using such terms as "ultimate fighting" and/ or "the octogon", etc. Terms which were coined by the UFC. Some words associated with the events like "mma" or "cage fighting" in general can't be coined because dana white is not able to own these things because he did not invent mixed martial arts or cage fighting. Dana white did for mixed martial arts what vince mcmahon did for pro wrestling and he is trying to protect his assets from copycats. Look at spaghetti sauce as an analogy you can rip off some famous recipe only changing one ingredient and be a succesful competitor with the top brands, but you must be very catious as to not rip off thier advertising slogans or name brand logos.

UFC wants everyone to use a cage. They just don't like another company using their trademark (the octogon) in logo's or use an exact coppy UFC's cage to the point where someone could actually think they are watching the UFC. You still see plenty of orgs using cages of all shapes and sizes without risk. It's only the orgs who try to get themselves confused with UFC that get sued.

imagine turning on the tv one day and there is a blue and yellow "FUC-fighters ultimate challenge" logo sitting atop a slightly darker shade of grey mat surrounded by a black fenced "hexagon"... i might be fooled for a few minutes before i realize, "hey thats not Joe Rogan".
