Computer Generated Power Rankings 2003-2004

I posted a thread earlier listing the top 10 fighters of '05, '06, and '07. I got a good response so I decided I would go a couple mores yrs back.

Here are the top 10 fighters of 2003 and 2004 according to my computer generated power rankings system. The system works pretty simple. Fighters are divided up into 4 catagories: Top 5, Top 10, Top 20, and Unranked. You get more points for defeating higher ranked opponents and lose fewer points when being defeated by a highter ranked opponent. That means if you beat lets say Fedor, you get a large number of points and conversly if that same fighter is defeated by Fedor he loses a small number of points.

Fighters also gain and lose bonus points when fights end by sub or ko. Belts also yield bonus points. There is also a very complicated "wieght factor" built in for those fighting outside of their weight class.

Now I know what most of you are thinking....well who decides the rankings?? The sad truth is that rankings period whether general or point based will always have a tinge of bias and subjectivness. So consequently this system is only as good as your rankings. I tried to use the most generally accepted rankings. I started sticking to Sherdogs top 10 when they created theirs. So I will say right from the start that this is not a perfect system, but then again who's is?. Well here they are.

TS, thanks again, read the first thread and it is obvious you put a lot into this. Not everyone will agree, and there is no perfect system but yours (imo) is as good as I've seen. Thx-

For some reason I have a feeling this won't be torn to shreds, even though it is inferior to the numerous other statistically based rankings posted here.

It's too subjective for my taste.

I really like this idea. But there seems to be some inconsistency in some of this. Why would you only take away 25 points from Edwards for losing to Hansen. But 40 away from Belfort and Hughes for losing to Top 5 fighters as well. Is this because this is for a title or was this just an omission.

Remember you gain and lose bonus pts based on if the fight ended in KO or Sub. For Edwards he lost a decision to a top 5 so he only lost 25 pts. Hughes and Belfort were stopped and thus lost 40 pts instead of 25. I threw in the bonus pts to try to account for the actual quality of wins. If someone like Thiago Tavaras takes someone to a boring decision he shouldn't get as many points as lets say Nate Diaz who came out and stopped his opponent. So conversly a person who loses but doesn't get stopped deserves kudos over the guy who came out and got stopped.
