Chuck's #1 quality

Yes, Chuck's main strength is widely considered to be his powerful counter punching. However, that is not what makes him such a great fighter. His #1 quality is...HYPNOSIS. How else can he get all these quality fighters to employ such bad game plans.

Exhibit A: Jeremy Horn. Horn's new and improved striking was impressive. That coupled with his granite chin gave him a very good chance against Liddell. But after the hypnosis, he decides to spend the entire fight trading blows with Chuck. Never once does he try to take it to the ground (except a couple of times when Chuck hit him so hard the hypnosis flew out of his head).

Exhibit B: Renato Sobral. Babalu is a well rounded fighter with an excellent ground game. We assume he also watched the tapes of Liddell KOing everyone including Horn and himself. So what is his gameplan? Chase Chuck around the ring throwing wild punches. The only logical explanation is hypnosis.

Oh well. The rest of the card was very good.

no, it's because his opponents have no other gameplans but to strike with him till he leaves an opening for a takedown...
and most of the time, chuck is always prepared to sprawl or get back up to his feet when he does get taken to the ground...

You can't blame anyone but Babalu for his own shitty gameplan my friend.

I think the problem is that Chuck is just a horrible matchup for a ground fighter, so they have to come up with something. You lose focus for even a moment and it's all over. Babalu lost control of himself and went at him swinging and got dropped.

It's not just bad gameplans by his opponents, its that his takedown defense and crazy punching power means that very few strategies will work well, and even slight deviation can mean your night is over.

Yeah, that is probably true. That would explain tonight's fight. But I never could figure out the Horn fight. He was hanging in there for a long time and had plenty of time to implement a game plan.
