Chuck and Wandy: The End of an Era
After Chuck and Wandy have it out, what will be the most anticipated bout in MMA? I can't figure it out. Some will say Fedor and Randy, but to me it is not the same. Don't get me wrong, that fight needs to happen, but it doesn't have the same romance (for lack of better words) that UFC 79 will present us with. This is the fight. The one that fans have been begging for, for years. No matter what you think of these two fighters, they our heroes of this sport. One, a street fighter who's style has been refined thoroughly through Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu, and the other, who refuses to go to the ground, one who only accepts two options, knock him out, or get knocked out. I truly see the end of the "old school" era once this fight has concluded. Look how far these guys go back. Both help build the two largest MMA circuits the world will ever see. You might not grasp it now, but when you see Chuck and Wandy embrace each other after they have it out, you will. I can't even imagine it right now, Chuck and Wandy hugging and honoring one another afterwards. Anyway, just felt like writing that.

I was thinking the same thing last night. Once, the pride superstars die out, where will the excitement come from?

The "old school" era concluded long before this fight was even first scheduled to be at UFC 65 (IMO, the old era ended at the PRIDE 2000 Grand Prix when Royce Gracie's corner threw in the towel after a 90-minute battle with Sakuraba). This match is simply a showdown between two-long time veterans of the game to settle, once and for all, who is the quintessential light heavyweight of our time.

To me, the fight is sort of like Don Frye taking on Ken Shamrock. (Yawn)

agree bro ... in 6 years these guys will be the Don fryes, Bas Ruttens, and Ken shamrocks of the sport.
Just like when Ken and royce fought, and era ended.
It will be hard to have such a true and deep superfight ever develop with the way the sport has become.
