Arona took Fedor down and in the first fight against Wandy got him down alot.
The second fight he had a hard time and was punished alot when he tried. He still got him down, but Arona is much stronger than Chuck.
Arona couldn't do anything with his takedowns basically. He had Wandy down under him so many times and being an ADCC champion if anyone could submit Wandy it would have been Arona basically. Of course Arona likes to play it safe on the ground and doesn't take risks, but that just goes to show you he does respect Wandy's ground ability.
I don't have a doubt in my mind that Arona would school just about any D-1 wrestler, except for maybe the ones that go on the olympic team and actually become world-class wrestlers.
So if Arona can't do it what makes Chuck think he would have a high chance of winning against Wandy when he takes him to the ground?
If it were that easy to get Wandy down and sub or gnp him one would think Yoshida, Arona, Nakamura, Rampage or Fujita would have done so. All these guys have world-class takedowns and can either submit the best of them or gnp anyone to a victory. Fujita beat Mark Kerr when he was still undefeated, so it's not like he is particularly vulnerable when it comes to guys with takedown and ground ability.
Chuck is no Yoshida or Nakamura on the ground when it comes to Judo.
Chuck is no Arona on the ground when it comes to BJJ
Chuck is no Fujita when it comes to wrestling.
Chuck is no Rampage when it comes to takedowns and ground control.
All these guys lost to Wanderlei by the way. Doesn't matter which art he is confronted with if you ain't Mark Coleman with great striking or Fedor you won't dominate Wanderlei on the ground period.
He could hang with all of them in their element or had skills enough to avoid being taken down, yet Chuck says people say he should take him down and then beat him somehow?
How's that Chuck?
Chuck will stand with Wandy because that's his best bet to win the fight. He can't hurt Wandy on the ground at all as far as i'm concerned. Cage or no cage he will be able to ground Wandy in neither Pride nor UFC. If he has the stand-up to counterpunch someone like Wandy that has excellent head movement and throws combinations like a maniac and keeps coming even after Mark Hunt hits him flush, we'll see.
Anyone saying he'll smash Wandy or run through him doesn't have a clue about the axe murderer. He'll be cometitive against almost anyone except some of the fastest, most well-rounded heavyweights with more reach and just as good a ground ability, because then strength will be a factor Wandy will have huge problems overcoming. He'll be the underdog against Crocop or Fedor but not Liddell.
These dudes (Chuck and Wand) are on the same level with Wandy being more tested and more well-rounded than Chuck and Chuck having more knockout power in a single punch and that and his good footwork will be Liddells chance not his wrestling and his purple belt in BJJ. That's nonsense.
People on here propabyly think Tito beat him so Chuck will kill him which is basically MMAth applied to something that happend like 5 years ago. Let me explain this to the TUFers:
This is not the same dude that fought Tito back then. He improved year after year at the almost same speed GSP improves. Arona is the stronger version of Tito with better standup and BJJ. Only thing Tito might have on Arona is aggresiveness on the ground. Arona just lost to Wandy.
Today Tito would propably loose to Wandy and he'd be a very very very bad matchup for Wandy just like Arona was. When he beat Arona he convinced everyone that he basically closed all the "holes" in his game and is now on Fedors level when it comes to being well-rounded. In a division much more packed you could even argue he is the most well-rounded fighter today. To me Shogun had a nice run, but imo Wandy is still the better fighter. That can be debated but not the fact that Chuck has nothing on Wandy on the ground.
