Ken Shamrock's beatdown interview

I read the posts calling Ken an egomaniac, and how ebarrasing his interview was.

I gave the interview a listen (I didn't before reading all the posts cause I am not really that interested in the third Tito fight, nor am I a big Ken fan) and I gotta say I don't see what all the beef is about.

Ken was respectful in his opinions. He even said he does not know if the second fight would have been over just 30 seconds later, but that in his heart he felt like it was stopped too soon and that he could have still won it (what fighter is not suppose to have that in them. To be on the bottom eating elbows and still not loose heart and quit).

Ken also brought up how he was upset how he came off on the show. There can be no question that the show is heavily edited. THose who seen second season and found Matt Hughes was cast into the role of the bad guy know this. Every one from teh show said Matt was not a bad guy, but rather the editing monster got him. It is what makes a good dramatic show.

Ken had to be cast as the guy you don't like, and then Tito as the future star. UFC knew Ken was going down. Ken says he was upset how he was made to look and then the quick stoppage made him feel like the deck was really stacked against him. He does NOT say he thinks it was set up for him to loose, but just felt at the time he was really being used to a great degree to pump up Tito and his career was not of the biggest concern.

His "rant" about all his fueds that help build UFC...guess what guys, check the numbers, Ken WAS and IS a big name in the UFC and that was not just lipservice. I was watching back when Ken was fighting Royce, and that fight was HUGE and the first real rivalry. Then his fight with Severn came and again was the second big rivalry. There was no other rivals in the UFC like that. Those were the two top dogs fighting.

Now this TIto rivalry is another big one. The PPV numbers don't lie. I remember the numbers for the show previous to the first tito-shamrock fight, and then look at the PPV numbers for that fight.

I can admit I was routing for Tito, I like Tito, and I am not really a big Shamrock fan (not that I am a hater like some are for him), but I thought he just takes too much flack and every one seems to jump on him too quick. He is a UFC legend, and he clearly is one of the biggest names in the sport, and he was the first poster boy for the UFC (sorry Royce, but a muscle bound white Irish guy was what boxing was looking for for years, and the UFC used him great).

WHy all the hate? If Ken wins, he will have done so with hard work. Good for him.

I dont hate him, but I find him to be mentally challenged. The guy makes every one of his matches personal. Think about his feuds and trashtalk with Don Frye, Saku, and Tito. He was a very good fighter who is well past his prime but still thinks he is the best.

Ken won't win. Tito is going to maul him for the 3rd time sending Ken into an embarrassing retirement. Ken shoulda got outta MMA earlier and salvaged at least half of his dignity. I'll be sure to be at his funeral though .

I'm with MMAsterKillah. Ken always hams up his fights. The prefight trash talk about Frye in PRIDE was soooo lame.

Ken should hang it up and stop talking the talk when he obviously can no longer walk the walk. There is no shame in being beaten by father time.

Note, he does not still think he is the best. Yes he believes in himself and his capabilities, but that kinda is what you have to do if you are gonna fight.

And it was DON FRYE who made is personal with Ken. He even made verbal attack's at Ken's family!

Tito is also a guy who LOVES to make things personal and get under a fighter's skin and makes a fued.

It is not like it is always Ken. But for real, every one knows its the fueds that sell, and Ken is a master pitch man if nothing else. He can help sell a fight and create drama. There is a reason why he could step into WWF and be successful.

Funny you mention the Royce/Ken fight - 36mins + - watched it last night before bed and woke up on the couch just as they were walking out of the ring - Royce's eye looked a bit grim..so will have to watch it tonight with a cup of coffee instead of Horlicks!!

Personally I am not a Ken fan, I can see how TUF maybe stitched him but at times I don't think he helped himself on that one -the coaches he brought in etc compared to Tito. Tito talking and coaching and Ken yelling and arguing - I know I know it could be edited but still unless you were there then we will never know if Tito was the same at times...

I hope Tito wins more because if Ken does its back to the potential remathc merry-go-round and thats not what I want to see now - want to see Tito, Forrest etc all challenging for the title - could have a fair few good fighters all up there within the next 12mnths and in turn make the division very exciting.. Ken winning simply takes Tito out of the equation for awhile - though he already has his title shot in Dec I guess it won't matter too much but back to back defeats could hurt him more than a Ken win and Chuck loss.. Not counting the potential bananaskin of getting whipped by Dana.....

Its nice to see an intelligent post about Shamrock instead of just hating on him..

from reading his second book and listening to his interviews he is not delusional to think he's as fast or good as he was 10 years ago and he gives respect where it is due.

Good points from beginning to end. Not bad for a Tito man
