Funny... never saw curling up in the the foetal position described as a viable defence in any of the lessons i have ever had.
You must have vastly different teachers than i have

It can't be to difficult to get audio on what Vera said.

True, but he was rolling from side to side. It didnt help him much, but one could interpret that as intelligent defending.
Of course its a stretch of the rules, that much is true, and open for interpretation.

I'd like to get confirmation from the audio or the referee, it's possible he wouldn't admit it if he did verbally submit.

Cant help you with that, since i watched it live. I dont think he said stop, but hey.... thatīs just a guess of course.
The point i was making is that Werdum probably couldnt understand what Vera said, and made his own interpretation.
But true, thatīs also a guess.

You really, really should not stop fights based on technicalities - it goes against the very core of MMA. Had Vera been hurt, and "unable to intelligently defend himself", fine - stop it. But he was not hurt, and by the look of it, the damage he was taking was pretty limited. Most likely he would have survived the 15 seconds without much problems - meaning the stoppage was nothing less than a scandal.

I think it's a real stretch to say that moving around slightly while not attempting to reverse the position and copping 26 unanswered blows could really be interpreted as intelligently defending yourself...
I am as big a nutthugger of certain fighters as the next guy but even if one of my favorite fighters pulled the same "oh there's only 30 seconds left, if i squirm around a bit and wait out the round and I'll be fine" crap, i'd still think the same thing.
...that being said I would have stopped the kimbo fight after the first 15 seconds of unanswered blows as well.

Agreed. Its kinda like stopping a fight due to a rear naked choke while the person is not out.
And rolling and covering up is more defensive than being in a sunk choke.

Oh I know. That's the bad thing. It's appalling inconsistency (sometimes on the same night), that annoys the fighters, as well as the people watching.
