Bottom line to Vera - getting in a fetal position and holding your hands to your face may not be perceived by some as intelligently defending yourself.
I personally don't think he was in any real danger - the shots that were landing weren't very powerful IMO, and he never seemed close to being unconscious. He was taking the shots. However, he's just as much to blame as Miragliotta.

I agree that Vera didn't help his case any. It's cotroversial how it would have turned out if it wouldn't have been stopped "so soon".It's kind of hard to truly compare the danger he was in to the JT vs. Kimbo fight as JT was almost giving Kimbo a massage at best with those feeble elbows he was dropping.Still kimbo didn't intelligently defend for a much longer period of time so...yeah it's controversial

It looked like a good stoppage to me. Werdum, one of the best JJ guys in the world was reigning unanswered blows on Vera from the mount. Vera wasn't intellegently defending himself or trying to advance his position, he was just turtled up and if he was trying to wait out the bell, shame on him. I wish Dan would have let it go because it wouldn't have taken 15 seconds to show that Vera was done.

It was stopped way to early in my opinion if he didn't.
If he did then there is no argument, verbal submission.

Werdum thought he heard him scream stop, since he doesnt speak English. Later Vera said in his post fight interview he told Dan he could go on or something like that.
So there was a miscommunication.
Like if you were punching me and i screamed: "Ik kan doorgaan!" you probably felt like i wanted to stop ;).
(That's Dutch for: I can go on)

I can't believe that people are actually saying this is questionable.

Its all in comparison to the Kimbo fight.
Of course you should watch every fight seperately, but it's hard when you just saw Kimbo taking waaaay more shots without the stop.
Oh well, i guess most of us understand each others point.

I find it hard to take a point in this one. If i was a ref i would let it go just a few punches more, especially when i was Dan after last week.
Outcome would have been the same though, just 5 seconds later.

Mate, although the term "intelligently defending" yourself could be considered something of a grey area, i find it really hard to find this so called grey area in a scenarion where someone curled up and took 26 unanswered blows.
Surely Brandon has seen MMA fights before right? Even if he was fine (and I am not saying he wasn't), he had to know if he just sat there and got pounded on by an opponent the fight was going to get stopped.
He didn't try to improve his position or buck werdum off he just kind of curled up and squirmed a bit. You don't need a crystal ball to predict the obvious... what the hell did the think was going to happen?
I think don't think there is really any reason why any sane person could question that result if they knew the rules under which they were competing.

Fair point, but has the referee or Vera confirmed what they said?
It can't be to difficult to get audio on what Vera said.

Partly agreed. Still, those punches did not seem to really hurt him, plus there was only 15 seconds left. Most of them didnt even connect. But then again, i can understand a stoppage.
