Majority of the complaints people have about this stoppage is due to the same referee's non-action in the Kimbo/Thompson fight. If we all agree that fight should have been stopped, then we should be happy that this time around, the ref made the correct call. Two wrongs don't make a right, referees make mistakes, but to repeat the same mistake is simply not acceptable.
The MMA rule book says if the referee determines that a fighter is not intelligently defending himself, then he can call the fight. Vera was mounted and did nothing to try to escape mount. He was pounded on for 13 sec straight with 20 more sec left in the round by Werdum from a dominant position. Therefore the referee's decision to call the fight for Werdum is warranted.

For starters, the Kimbo fight has absolutely nothing to do with this fight. The circumstances were different and there is no need to even mention it.

Secondly, if blocking the overwhelming majority of shots thrown at you with your hands and arms isn't an intelligent defence, what is?

While I enjoy posting and debating topics with reasonable people(such as yourself) I must admit that when I heard the Big John interview on beatdown radio I pretty much made up my mind that It was a shitty stoppage. Maybe you should check it out if you haven't already.

Just for your curiosity, if I could point out a good example of a fighter that was in trouble but was allowed to continue, the Brian Gassaway-Forrest Petz fight(sats Adrenalin card)was a good one. Petz was in pretty big trouble at the end of the first if I remember correctly. Either Forrests mother or Gassaways corner might have stopped that fight if it was up to them.
