All these people saying it was a good stop are clearly crazy. Kimbo gets his face pounded and elbowed by JT and Dan doesn't stop the fight. And that was with more time in the round. Now sure Werdum had the dominant position and Vera was taking some shots but hey, If he was in trouble then he would have TAPPED. The only time the ref should step in is if the fighter is clearly in danger of getting brain damage or is really hurt and cant tap for himself or refuses to tap. CLEARLY Vera would have survived that beating. Its a shame that Refs hold so much power in deciding a fight when it should be left to the fighters. LEt them go and lets see if Vera can turn it around in the 2nd or if Werdum pulls off the win. Premature stoppage because we were robbed of getting a clear and definite win.

I agree, Vera was taking some shots but still doing a decent job of reducing the damage, and I think when you are down to the last few seconds of a round, the standard by which you stop a fight should go up. Securing a dominant position is not enough for a fight to be stopped.

Vera was mounted at 0:33 of the first round, Werdum pounded Vera from the mount for 13 sec and the fight was stopped at 0:20.
The ref could have let the fight go on for a little longer, but the outcome would have been the same.
Werdum is a 2nd degree BJJ blackbelt who won numerous grappling competitions. When someone like him mounts you, you are not going to escape, period.

Vera was finished either way, he was going to lose that fight so who cares what he thinks.
He wasnt fighting back, he the fight was called, whats so hard about it?

Why not stop the fight RIGHT WHEN HE GETS MOUNTED? That would be the safest thing and since there is no way to escape "period" then there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to let the fight continue.
In fact, it is a completely careless risk to let the fight go on RIGHT AT THE TIME FULL MOUNT IS AQUIRED and it is a gigantic threat that is in no way justifiable.
Lets nerf the sport so much that you can watch it with your grandmother and she will have to like it.

you know the diaz fight last night had a very similar stoppage, none of his blows were really landing in the mount, yet no one says anything.

Because simply being mounted does not mean you win. You got to give Vera a chance to try to improve his position and get out of the mount. But apparently Vera is content to curl up and not improve his position for 13 sec. Either he can't or he is not willing to escape the mount. In etiher one of the cases, he deserves to lose.
