Bottom line to Vera - getting in a fetal position and holding your hands to your face may not be perceived by some as intelligently defending yourself.
I personally don't think he was in any real danger - the shots that were landing weren't very powerful IMO, and he never seemed close to being unconscious. He was taking the shots. However, he's just as much to blame as Miragliotta.

He wasn't even in the fetal position. He was moving around and swinging his hips, just before the stoppage he did that again (you can clearly see it).
Someone made a good post in another thread that I liked. He said that they need to better define what is and is not intelligently defending yourself. If you are in a Thai clinch and are just blocking and attempting to block the knees is that also not intelligently defending yourself since you are only blocking and attempting to block just like when you are just blocking or attempting to block shots in the ground?
Vera was NOT getting hit with many of those shots, he was blocking a ton of them/taking them on the arms and hands and was NOT in any real danger.
