Both Matt Hughes and Royce Gracie are good. Why didnt' Royce Rush Matt?

Both Royce and Matt are good. My question continues to be why didn't Royce rush Matt as soon as possible. Trying to throw and kick with punches and kicks just to jab wasn't his strength to begin with. Watch his earlier fights in the UFC and even in Pride and I think he tried as soon as possible to rush his opponent and attempt to tackle them. Why abandon your strength? Doesn't anyone else wonder?

Maybe he would have lost or gotten knocked out, maybe he would have tackled his opponent and won? But why abandon your game plan. But again maybe his strategy was to try something new.

Who knows. I wonder what Royce said about the fight after in the press conference and what his plans are?

I just want to say Matt Hughes is one of the best MMA Fighters out there and very good. And Royce Gracie is one of the best of all time. I just wish Royce would have rushed Matt and attempted to take control and not "wait" for an opening.

Both guys are very good.

This really didn't need another topic.

Royce didn't rush Matt because it wouldn't have worked.

"Tackle?"

You say it wouldn't have worked, that's your opinion but you or I will never know. You keep saying it wouldn't have worked, but only Matt and Royce know this. Who knows whether it would have worked or not. That's what Royce seems to have done in his other fights against bigger and different opponents. But again, both Matt and Royce and very good and skilled

Thanks.

Royce is not good at takedowns and he would probably get punched in the face. See Renzo vs Henderson for an example of what could happen.

What makes you think Royce could just shoot in and take Matt Hughes down?

If Royce thought that he could just use a front kick and shoot in and get a take down like he did in the early UFCs, he would have done so.

Because that's what Royce did in the UFC before and in pride too. That's why. And he was successful at it. Renzo and Royce are different fighters and so is Mr. Henderson. Royce should have rushed him like he has always done before. Go for it. Who knows what would have happened.

Matt and Royce are very skilled and good.

First instinct: ZOMG you nub!!111oneone!!

Matt Hughes is a wrestler and Royce Gracie is not. Wrestling is a different discipline of grappling from BJJ. Generally, wrestlers are MUCH better at taking down someone, as it is an important part of their sport. As such, they are very good at defending takedowns. Royce Gracie is a GJJ/BJJ guy and is not known for his takedowns. Takedowns against a competent requires a lot of skill. Royce's takedowns worked against untrained, unskilled and/or surprised opponents in the early days of the sport but nowadays is unimpressive.

In short, Royce could not take down Matt Hughes if Hughes did not want to be taken down. Hughes is much better at controlling where the fight takes place, standing or on the ground, than Royce. Royce, along with every other person with a modicum of knowledge of the sport knew this long before the fight happened. This is why he didn't just "rush" and "tackle."
