Question about eye injuries

I tried to put this in the ask the fighter's forum but I guess I'm not allowed to create threads there. I don't know where else to put this but I would really like an answer.

About a year ago I had my right orbital bone fractured in a fight, and the eye doctor told me that there was an increased chance of my retina detaching because of the trauma my eye had suffered. Just yesterday I got hit in the same eye (playing basketball this time, though) and had the bottom part of my field of vision give out. I went back to the doctor today and he said there was a little spot where it looked like my retina might be beginning to separate.

This scared the shit out of me for two reasons. One, a detached retina means I'm blind in my right eye. Two, even if I can get surgery to correct it, the doctor couldn't seem to stress enough that my days of fighting were over.

My question is...in a sport with so many nasty eye injuries, how do fighter's cope with this? Just keep plugging along and hope that they never go blind? Do I just have a pussy retina? What's the deal?

Damn.

All I can say is, never underestimate how well the human body can heal. Something close to that happen to Randy vs Rizzo. He lost the vision in his right eye for 6 MONTHS, but with some kind of surgery and rehab, he regained his vision back.

Broken orbital bones is a pretty rare injury in MMA....I have no stats to back it up but from my anecdotal experience it seems to be more common in Hockey than MMA.

The only MMA broken orbital bone that I can recall at the pro level is Bob Sapp when he got Sho ryu ken'd by Cro Cop.

And I think if allowed to heal properly it's not that likely to happen again.

From the sounds of your injuries you may want to lay off combat sports for a few years and see what happens from there.

I know that I'm dating myself...but, if I remember correctly, Sugar Ray Leonard had a detached retina after his fight with Hearns, which led to his first "retirement". He came back to fight a year or two later. He's the only person in combat sports that I can remember fighting after the injury.

Having a blind spot as a fighter is bad news. When fighters get busted up during a fight and one of their eyes swells over, the other fighter almost always circles to that side and throws punches and kickes into their blind spot. Having this disadvantage from the get go could be bad if the opponent new about it.

I had surgery to correct an ACL tear and my knee never fully recoverd and that pretty much went away with any hopes of competing. You could take a chance with it, but it could really mess you up. The way I saw it was "Is this worth my health?" And even tho I loved to train, it wasn't worth more time in surgery, physical therapy, med bills.

Didn't Diaz have a fractured orbital in the Gomi match, too? I can't really remember...

Cro cop broke sakuraba's orbital bone and also josh barnett's. I also think that Jens Pulver messed up dennis hallman's orbital bone in their fight
