Big John at Top of His Game

I've been critical of ref John McCarthy in the past for too much nagging, too much rushing the fighters, and too many standups. It seemed like he wanted every fight to be a rehash of the first Forrest vs. Bonnar fight. You don't scream at fighters to "Keep it working" when they are simply trying to catch their breath for a few seconds. After all, these guys are humans, not machines.

But after watching the horrible refs in the IFL, I've come to appreciate the job done by the UFC refs.

McCarthy was perfect last night in the Kenflo fight. He didn't scream at the fighters, he stayed out of the way, he gave Florian the benefit of the doubt on a near tapout, and he generally showed why he is the best ref in MMA.

Props to Big John for a job well done!

McCarthy was always a very good referee.

Yeah, but for a while BJM was getting too involved in determining the outcomes.

The ground game requires patience sometimes as it takes a while to work for a good position. I got sick of him yelling at fighters on the ground.

Last night was different, as he shut up and stayed out of the way. It was a textbook job.

The only thing that ever pisses me off about UFC refs is they give advice during the fight.

BJM told Franklin to "watch his head" right b4 he got it fucking kneed off by Silva.

Mazzaggati did the same with Joe Stevenson. I just wish they wouldn't talk to the fighters during the fight.

When he says "Watch his head" that means watch hitting him in the back of the head...which is illegal. He's not giving advice he's reffing.

The only time he ever says anything like that is when someone is striking to or near the back of the head.
