Icon14 Bernard Hopkins says UFC fighters would kick his ass!

This morning on Jim Rome's radio show The Jungle, Rome interviewed B-Hop about his fight coming up with Winkey Wright.

Hopkins was asked if he had any respect for MMA fighters and how he would do if he got in to the cage.

He first got off sounding like your ususal boxing elitist asshole by saying (and im paraphrasing):

"Boxing is an art and takes skill, MMA is two guys rolling around elbowing eachother in the face, guys like Muhammed Ali and Sugar Ray Lenoard would say the same thing. I got respect for them cause their crazy, but guys in Phily fight like that on the streets all the time. Maybe im hating, but its just not on the same level as boxing"

Then Jim jumped in to ask him another question and B-Hop said "Hold on Jim, I didnt answer your question about how I would do against them!"

This is where I started felling sick cause i have always been a B-Hop fan, and i was mentally preparing myself for the BS he was going to spew.

B-Hop says (again paraphrasing): "THEY"D WHOOP MY ASS! ALL OF EM', THERE WORST GUY WOULD WHOOP MY ASS! Dont get me wrong, I would try, but i havent fought like that since prison and when I was a kid."

Props to Hopkins for keeping it real.

He's hilarious. I've always liked him. But he's no James Toney. Pure comedy.

MMA is an art also, but I do think boxing as a sport is much more defined than MMA. Were still argueing about the rules here in MMA.

I hope boxing and MMA can co-exist, because I loved the De La Hoya / Mayweather fight and can't wait for Hopkis and Wright as well as Klitsko and Brewster.

He's right to a certain extent, some part of MMA are not on par with boxing but i think the striking aspect only applies to that. Grappling can definitely be considered on par with boxing IMO.

He was honest with what he said, which i totally respect. He didn't bash it, he gave his honest opinion. But give MMA the same amount of time boxing has had to develop and then see if you can still call it not an "art." We all know it already is though.

I would have liked to hear that interview. Too bad it had to happen on the Jim Rome show.

Boxing and MMA is apples and oranges. It's like asking Cael Sanderson how he would do in MMA. He may feel that wrestling take more skill or whatever, but if he's realistic he knows what would happen if he fought an MMA guy "for real." That's pretty much the point Hopkins was going for.

Don't be fooled by what Hop is saying. He still thinks its basically a street fight. He's saying that in a real skilled fighting profession, boxing he would succeed but he's just not use to the street brawl anymore.
