Shamrock Pushing MMA farther Mainstream
I think I understand what Frank is trying to do, even though he hasn't done a great job of explaining it to the public.
What he is saying is that by only involving himself in BIG drawing, interesting storyline matches that are well produced and cross-promoted, he thinks he can help push MMA mainstream and away from a single dominant promotion.
He has always been a big advocate of the fighters are the real brand and hates the UFC making all the money and not the fighters. Think about this: UFC does BIG boxing event numbers each month. Top guys make what 500k to 1m? Where does the rest of the $$$ go? As the main event Frank made 1.3m+probably other PPV bonus selling 20% as many PPV's as a single UFC.
Whether he'll ever fight the best in the world @ 185 is yet to be seen but fighting only names that DRAW vs. Talent seems to have a purpose. I think he wants to be (and is) the first to prove the FIGHTER sells the PPV, not the brand.
Maybe his Legacy will be that "Names" like Liddell, Jackson, Fedor, Couture, GSP will take notice, go independent and shift power from the BRAND to the FIGHTERS.
Just listen to Frank and Gary Shaw in the post fight conference again with that in mind, I think you'll see it.
What do you guys think?
