Astonishingly Simple Judging Change That Could Drastically Improve Consistency!
Hope I can explain this clearly and succintly...
1. During a round, each judge has his hand on a 100 point click wheel that starts at the neutral 50 point position.
2. The '100' end of the scale represents one fighter, and the '0' end of the scale represents his opponent.
3. Throughout the round, the judge will continuously adjust the wheel towards whichever fighter is scoring, real time, at the exact moment the fighter is scoring.
4. For example, (and these are just examples, let's not quibble over the point values)
-Fighter A lands a weak, ineffective leg kick:
the judge does not adjust the click wheel.
-Nothing much happens for a good 30 seconds, but fighter A is clearly the agressor:
the judge adjusts the click wheel one point towards fighter A.
-Fighter B lands a moderately effective leg kick:
the judge adjusts the click wheel one point towards fighter B.
-Fighter A counters with a devastating head shot that drops fighter B:
the judge adjusts the click wheel five points towards fighter A.
-Fighter B recovers and secures a takedown:
the judge awards two clicks to fighter B.
-Fighter A locks in a deep triangle choke before fighter B eventually escapes:
the judge awards three clicks to fighter A.
etc., etc., etc.
5. At the end of the round, each judge looks to the final position of his click wheel to determine which fighter won, and by how much he won.
5 benefits of this system
1. If you're scared of abandoning the 10 point must system, keep it!
At the end of each round, the judges can simply convert their click wheel scores to a 10 point must score following objective criteria as to what constitutes a 10-9, 10-8 or even 10-10 score (e.g. 0-5 clicks above or below neutral = a 10-10 round; 6-19 points above or below neutral = a 10-9 round; 21-35 points above or below neutral = a 10-8 round, etc.)
2. Everything meaningful in a round is scored!
This one kind of speaks for itself.
3. More objective scoring.
Many of the various aspects of a fight can be assigned their own objective click value, e.g., soft strike, hard strike, knockdown, soft takedown, hard takedowns, loose submission attempt, tight submission attempt, sweep, passing the guard, taking the back, etc. This would GREATLY improve consistency in scoring, especially in grappling heavy fights, where many of the poor judges don't have a clue what they're looking at.
4. More accountability for judges
It would be a very simple matter to have the judge's click wheels hooked up to a monitoring device so that the Commissions could review exactly what and how the judges are scoring fights. This, along with the objective features noted above, would enable the Commissions to ensure greater consistency in future scoring. Plus, if the monitoring info were made available to the public, it would be a huge benefit to the fighters, who will be able to see exactly what the judges are looking for. Hell, I'd love to have it as a bonus dvd feature where you can see the lines representing the judging going up and down in the corner of the screen during the fight.
5. Less stalling, more action!
If a fighter knows that getting a takedown alone won't win him the round because it won't give him enough clicks to take him outside of the automatic 10-10 round score, he will actually have to do something when the fight hits the mat, e.g. pass guard, land meaningful strikes, go for subs, etc. Plus, fighters on bottom will finally be able to get credit and score points for meaningful strikes and sub attempts from the bottom.
This was a long post.
That's all I have at the moment.
Thoughts?
