My Thoughts on Randy Couture..

First of all, I just want everybody to know that Randy Couture is one of the greatest fighters to grace the sport of MMA, but I'm just sick and tired of hearing everybody's praises towards him. I'm seeing posts from people saying that Randy has overcome so many obstacles, or that hes on such a hot streak right now, shoot, some have even gone so far as to say that he may even beat Fedor (refer to the poll results). To me, that's one of the dumbest question ever. People have made it seem as though Couture is unbeatable because of what, 2 wins in the heavyweight division? When he won the heavyweight belt before, how long did he hang on to it? How long do you guys really think he'll hang on to this one, especially when he fights guys like Big Nog, who is a true heavyweight.

First, Couture beat Tim Sylvia, who many analysis have thought to have been an impossible task, but if anybody has ever seen Tim fight, they would have saw that coming. Besides Andrei (whos gone downhill as of late), Couture was Tim's biggest test ever, and he got exposed by Couture. Because of Couture, we all saw Sylvia's weakness. Now we all know that strikers, like Andrei, aren't the only type of fighters that can beat Tim. Guys like Barnett, Big Nog, or Fedor, would tool Tim Sylvia, simply because they have the ability to take him down at will. Has there been any debate as to whether or not Tim would even present a challenge to any of those fighters anymore? No, because we all know the answer now, thanks to Randy.

Then, Couture beats Gonzaga, who was overhyped dramatically by so many people, that it was just downright ridiculous, to the point where people were actually debating whether Fedor would beat him in an MMA fight, all because Gonzaga knocked out Cro Cop! Big deal, there are flukes in MMA all the time, who's going to believe that the same result will occur if GG was to fight Cro Cop again? If people actually believe that Gonzaga knew that he was going to knock out Cro Cop, with a high kick to the head, before the fight started, then you guys are lying to yourselves and to me, cause I just don't believe it. That one victory from Gonzaga has made him the biggest star in MMA, atleast up until last night. Now, after the lost to Couture, will there be anymore debates on sherdog as to whether or not Gonzaga would beat Fedor? Or if hes a true contender at the Heavyweight division? Will he ever be spoken about in general around Sherdog? Maybe, but for the most part, no. As soon as Gonzaga lost, people jumped of the bandwagon, and will give no more recognition to the guys talent anymore.

The point is, Couture never overcame that hard of an obstacle, he didn't tool 2 execellent fighters, he defeated 2 mediocre fighters. He slaughter those guys, and hes past his prime, that only means those guys were exposed for what type of caliber fighters they really are, it doesn't mean that Couture should be the number 1 heavyweight in the world, or that hes on a hot streak. It just simply means, he defeated 2 fighters, and thats all.

P.S.
I'm not bashing Randy by any means, I love that guy as a fighter, I just wanted to speak some truth, that's all.

mostly agree, but you're being a little harsh. Randy is definately #4 or #5 at hw, which is AMAZING considering his age and that just a little over a year ago he was getting beat down by a light heavyweight.

Ill say it again: GG lost that fight more then randy won it. Being where randy is today at the age that he is is amazing, but he isnt the best ever from a fighting ability stand point.

Can we just accept that it is a great story. How may other athletes in the twilight of there career have been able to return and compete at a high level?

Dude come on. Randy was just too much for for Gonzaga and he imposed his will in there. GG didn't make any big mistakes, he was simply not able to stay mentally tough enough to put any heat on Couture after his nose got broken. Obviously a broken nose like his was a HUGE distraction, but to be the best in the world you have to overcome those things.

Gonzaga is a tough guy and a top 10 HW right now, but he just couldn't get it going against Couture. He landed some nice shots that obviously hurt Couture, but he couldn't capitalize and Randy clinched everytime he was rocked. Gonzaga was not prepared to be stuck against the fence like that all night and it's exactly where Couture wanted the fight. Couture won due to superior gameplan and execution, not any big mistakes GG made.

I pretty much agree with what you are saying. Randy is getting so much praise mostly because he won a couple fights he was supposed to lose, rather than because they were top tier fighters that he beat. He's an easy guy to love and cheer for... people are getting blinded.
