why get a full mount anyways???

It seems like many fighters when they are on the ground inmediately they want to pass guard and get a full mount, this of course makes sense, when you have a full mount the other fighter is at your complete mercy and you can end the fight, that is in a perfect world BUT...

what I see is that every time a fighter gets a full mount the fighter below gets so desperate that he inmediately does ANYTHING to get out of the full mount, they either raise their hips to make the fighter on top lose balance or (the most common one) they turn around in which case the other fighter can now choke him. But its very RARE for an experienced figher to just get the other fighter mounted and not do anything, because guess what?.. they all know the secret now that a full mount equals a quick dead.

So if the fighter below is going to inmediately DO ANYTHING to try to escape, and most probably end up turning around ...why even try so desperate to get a full mount???

Now please understand that I do believe that a full mount is a great position to end your opponent but what I dont get is when on the floor the guy on top TRIES SO DESPERATELY to get a full mount as if thats the ONLY thing to do when on the floor. Like the only thing to do on the floor is get a full mount.

As I explained getting a full mount is great but most probably the guy below will do anything to get out of it and most times he WILL get out of it. Every fighter nowadays understand the concept of full mount and know that you have to do anything to get out of it., and probably you will.

Now for the ones who are going to say..."idiot when he turns around you can choke him"..well thats true but I dont think the full mount is meant as a transition to a choke, the full mount is meant to have a dominant position on your oponent, you dont do a full mount looking for a choke. The opportunity of the choke comes from the guy below turning around but the reason for the mount is not to choke your opponent.

I see fighters all the time on the floor, the guy on top trying and trying...and trying and trying to get the mount, and when he gets it, the guy below as I said turns around, defends the choke and then they stand up again.... SO WHY THE HELL does he tried so hard to get the mount in the first place??

Side control on the other hand allows you to control the fighter below without him turning around and with techinique you can beat him with elbows or one hand...but again my point in this is WHY always look for the mount when the other guy will turn, defend the choke and escape at the end, and why look for it so insistently as if its the only thing to do.

If you can get to a full mount, it shows dominance over your opponent and will score you some points with the judges.

I do partly agree with you though. I do BJJ, and I must say that I'm more comfortable in the sidemount than the fullmount. I have a tendency to get swept easily when I take the full mount. (Working on correcting that, though)

Even when a guy escapes the mount, he usually burns a huge amount of energy doing so.

I'd take the side mount but like somebody said it does get you more points. Full mount would be better utilized if most fighters didn't sit up and start wailing away. If you keep low get a good balance you can really take control of the situation

You answered your own question. it ends fights. However, I am part of the minority that believes the mount is only slightly overrated in terms of the end all, be all of opponent control. The benefit to risk ratio is not always worth it. If your base isn't top notch, but your opponents sweeps are... bad times.

Side control is better for striking in my opinion because both elbows and punchs come into play. But mount is better if done correctly. The most dominant position is mount on the back, when the opponent is stretched out. That makes it almost impossible to defend against strikes.

It's like anything in MMA. It depends on how good you are. Also it's easier for the heavier devisions to escape mount than it is for the smaller guys.
A lot of fights are finished from mount and it gives you a lot of options for a sub when they try to escape.
