anyone else agree james irvin should train w/chuck liddel
I know the guy is an explosive, powerful, agile, fast, quick and dynamic standup fighter; unfortunately he is in mma. This means he is at a distinct disadvantage IF he can't end the fight before it hits the ground ; or if he can't def well enough to get the top or standing 2position and stop his opp.
I think he really should spend time w/liddel and his camp; i know he can't get chuck's credentials, but maybe he can use liddel's unique ground def to round out his game and make his standup more of a decisive factor.
Chuck/james have alot in common in regards that their physical ability makes them almost unstoppable standing, even when facing larger opp or better skilled opp. Where chuck has the chin and durability, james has the explosiveness.
What makes chuck dangerous is his ability to def the sub and regain his feet almost immediately; sprawling is all well and fine; but at some point u will get brought down and ur abilty to quickly get back to ur feet will be the diff.. esp when ur ground game is lacking.
I THINK JAMES WOULD BENEFIT GREATLY WORKING W/CHUCK; DO U GUYS THINK IT WOULD HELP HIM AT ALL

This is a well thought out post. Irvin is an awesome athlete, but very young in MMA. He has come to the Big Show too soon. He needs another 2 or so years to mature as an all around fighter.
I believe working with Chuck and a better Jiu Jitsu school would do him wonders.

Agreed. Everyone knows how dangerous a striker he is, he needs to work on his ground skills or ground defense IMHO..then he'd really be a threat in the LHW div.

Irvin sometimes goes to the GracieFighter gym to train with Cesar Gracie, Nick Diaz, Jake Shields, and those guys. It takes time for anyone to improve his ground game. He's very athletic and extremeley explosive. He just needs some time to work into becoming a better all around fighter. I'm confident he'll get there. BTW He is supposed to be moving down to 185, I think he'll be exciting in that weight class

I think you are correct. I think James Irvin could really be something with a more complete game. Training with Chuck would be a good start, as Chuck seems to be able to shape fights to fit his game plan, but I think it would be in his best interests to train with a bona fide BJJ expert as well, so that in case his takedown defense falters he has tools to use from his back.
Don't quit on us James Irvin, we believe!!
