Nice writing, but just another thinly veiled "I know everything, I'm special because I closely follow MMA, the masses are uneducated" effort. MMA isn't rocket science, get over yourselves.
Without question Penn is ultra-talented, but from a very affluent family, and he simply lost interest. He appears to have lost his will to participate in rigorous conditioning - he admitted that he did not work hard on cardio before the Hughes match, which I find inexplicable.
Looking at his older fights, it is very obvious Penn is no longer as motivated - his face is about twice as big as it once was, hopefully he can still make 155lb. Given all of that, he WAS one of the best - whether he still has it is, after getting outworked by GSP and pummeled badly by Hughes, has yet to be determined.

In short: BJ is respected because he beat a one dimensional champion in Matt Hughes several years ago, and he was one of three people to choke out Gomi.

Well written piece.. but why aren't BJ's fans more upset with him because of this info? He has spectacular talent, and has wasted it by lack of training and motivation. He has said himself that he has a hard time finding motivation to train.
His lack of motivation stems from his ego. Just as Hughes took Penn lightly their first fight, Penn underestimates most of the people he fights as of late. The immense amount of skill this guy has is shadowed by his lack of heart lately, and I hope he moves to turn that around.

Anyhow yeah, great post. Shame that you're attempts to enlighten dipshits will probably go in vain. But know that there is still a small percent of people you do speak to who will appreciate what you said.
Only thing I didn't like is that you use the word nuthugger. While yeah there are plenty of nuthuggers out there, there are also plenty of "fans." You can distinguish the two simply by seeing how they respond. Nuthuggers aren't open to seeing or accepting things, while fans are. Kind of sick of the word, because everyone who is a fan of anyone now is considered a nuthugger even if they truly aren't.
I'll probably write a similiar post on Crocop and I'll admit I love the guy but I won't take credit away when it is due, from people who did beat him.

*your
TS great post. While I agree with what you wrote, I'm betting on Pulver again.

Penn is the man and I don't think dipshits on here realize how crazy him fighting Machida was at the time. The guy has a video onhis web site that shows what they are doing. He is always willing to teach people, so how people think he is a dick is beyond me.

OK I'll watch my mouth, but if you had any other P4P best fighter coming off 2 losses in a row, you'd question their status too.

I'm a self-admitted TUF Noob, but sometimes it's hard to crawl out of that label at Sherdog because nobody wants to break things down like you just did.
I had been trying to figure out all the Penn love, but Fight Finder didn't really tell the story and even seeing the fights didn't shed too much light since I wasn't aware of how well regarded his opponents were when he fought them.
Thanks for laying it out in a non-patronizing way.
