Great post.
It boggles my mind that he is not #1 p4p on everybody's list.
He fought a top 205lber to a decision, when he is 155 naturally. That is insane. That is P4P.
GSP has never evern fought outside of his weight class, and is crazy strong for 170 and people still have him higher than BJ....it's hurts my brain to try and comprehend how they can argue that. Hopefully your post wil help.

That's a great post by the OP, but the fact of the matter is he is 1-3 in the past 2 years, with his sole win being over Renzo.

Excellent thread bro, one of the best I've seen in a long time. I for one am a huge BJ fan and it's great how you complied all that info for the less educated mma fans. I believe BJ will be the lightweight champ once he gets him title shot!

Hindsight is always 20/20, I bet you were on here last March asking who Machida even was. Hey, BJ moved up in weight and didn't get finished, does that mean he is top pound for pound in the world? No. It just means he fought someone bigger than him. Why does a loss make him the #1 pound for pound fighter? Honestly. How? I would love to hear you explain that. By that logic shouldn't Diego be the greatest of all time because he was undefeated at Middleweight before going down to Welterweight? If Kawajiri moved up and fought Denis Kang would that make him the #1 Pound for Pound fighter to you?

I agree with much of your post. But I think theres a difference between thinking BJ is not worthy of praise for great accomplishments (which he is), and thinking people on this board build him up too much.
Penn has done amazing things, and is a gifted fighter. But, people on this board build him up and put himin the top 3 of practically every weight class hes ever fought in, despite not winning in them. Case in point, many people put him at number 3 at WW, despite him not having a win there for years, and overall his record at WW being mediocre, but it was against great competition. But the fact remains, no one can objectively rank him in the top 3 at 170 or 155, which many people do. So he is overrated, even though hes worthy of immense praise.

If he can hang with guys 50lbs heavier than him, yes that does say something. What other LW or even WW could do that.
BJ didn't fight to not lose, he fought and he lost a close decision, you're trying to make it sound like he just hung in there.
What does P4P mean. I always thought it means who is the most skilled, regardless of weight, and when you can fight guys who have much better advantages and still win, or atleast put up a great fight that shows something.
What does what I thought of Lyoto last March have to do with anything?

Yes, it says he fought someone bigger than him. Size does not equal skill. Juan Manuel Marquez is a more technically skilled boxer than Sam Peter, does that mean if Juan fought him and lost that it would still makehim the #1 Pound for Pound boxer? NO. Guess what, BJ LOST. It doesn't matter how much weight someone gives up, if they lose, they lose. You can't move someone up a rank because they "hung in there". If Faber fought Fedor and went to a decision would that make him the #1 pound for pound fighter?
wow You are grossly misinformed about the definition of pound for pound. You have no idea what it means and you are trying to argue it. Come on man.

Wow this topic got huge.
Basically I think it comes down to this... If you think BJ is a p4p top 5.. You've seen him fight alot.. If you dont.. You've seen his fight finder a lot.
Even when BJ loses.. There is that mass feeling, "Damn... BJ could have won that"
btw, Hughes > Penn
