Ya I know who he has lost to and I know how he lost. But IMHO there is no such thing as a great loser. Grant it mma is a sport where you can lose a few in a row and be left for dead and come back and take a division by storm. Thats what happened to Couture. But that being said in his last few fights he has not lived up to his potential. I mean his last win he got a JD over Renzo freaking Gracie for god sakes

Penn outstruck GSP for a round before being lay and prayed for two, and GSP is my favourite fighter. BJ Penn may have lost because of the judging criteria (round by round point system) but he did not lose any respect from me. Considering he was 15 pounds than his natural fighting weightclass
Against Hughes a rib injury halted what was beginning to look like a masterful performance. Again, this fight took place over his weight class
I fail to see how these fights should knock him into the "overrated" label. I mean, as someone previously pointed out, his losses are the equivlant of Chuck/Shogun going to HW and losing to Fedor and Nog after dominating one of them and losing a split decision to the other.
Im not saying BJ should be honoured as if he possesses some kind of divine fight for nut huggery, but ease up on the hate.

no doubt BJ is insanely good and one of the best p4p fighters in the world. Fedor comes to mind as well as Chuck, despite his recent loss. However, Jens is a smart fighter who has figured out BJ. Unfortunately BJ is just much better than Jens. Jens has the matchup edge, and the strategy edge in my book, but BJ has a huge talent edge. I expect a better fight than most, I don't think BJ will dominate. BJ by submission or Jens by decision, War Pulver!

how about, no one forget that his family is rich. seriously this guy does this because he is a natural born fighter. not for the money. he's in it to prove that he's the best. he does not dodge anyone. he was born to be a fighter.

Great post. I'm a big GSP fan as well but BJ won that fight, the scoring system really worked out for GSP in that fight. He got a few combos and LnP'd into a technical win.
I'll always remember what Lindland said when Joe asked BJ if he felt that he won, Lindland blurted "Look at his (GSP's) face." before BJ said anything. It was true, BJ really beat GSP up.
And as retarted as it sounds, BJ was really winning that second fight against Hughes until that rib injury.

Penn shouldn't be regarded as highly as he is.
Nobody is doubting his skills. He has tremendous skills, especially in the ground game. But I just cant root for a fighter with no heart or work ethic. If he had the work ethic of a Tito Ortiz, Matt Hughes, or Fedor, he could actually be undefeated right now. BUt instead of being undefeated, he has lost fights because after about 2 rounds he either gasses, gives up, or both.
He's actually one of my least favorite fighters, simply because he doesn't live up to his potential simply due to laziness. I just can't jump on the bandwagon of a fighter with no work ethic or heart.
The guy gets hit a couple times or gets involved in a tough scrap and he just gives up. Honestly, how can you cheer for a guy like that?
And stop giving him props for fighting at higher weight classes. He has often times showed up looking a little too soft. It leads me to believe that he is only fighting above 155 because he's too lazy to make that weight, not to be regarded as pound for pound best.

I did, I just always thought that Machida was a small LHW, so it didn't make sense for him to be above it.

Seems like the general consensus is that if BJ trained then he would be untouchable.

Not just trained.
I may have noted this, I don't know if it was in this topic, but if he had the work ethic of a workhorse like jens or Matt, he would be and unbeatable and unstoppable force with two belts around his waist, or maybe 3 if he wanted to beat Gomi again.
