Not what I was saying.

I've seen many Jack Dempsey fights from the 20's. I'm positive that I still don't understand how big a deal he was at the time.

It's easy to get an opinion through watching their fights, but knowing what the public perception was at the time makes it a lot easier to grasp how they were percieved.

There was a time about 3 years ago, after the Rodrigo Gracie fight, where Penn could have retired and would have been thought of as the best P4P fighter ever in MMA.

Good post. It's always nice to educate some of the newer fans around here. It'll make for better threads in the future. I still think Penn would've won their first fight had he pushed the pace more in the stand up.

BJ Penn's destruction of Uno was probably the biggest 'coming-out party' in MMA history. He KO'd him in 11 seconds!

A metoric rise to fame like no other.

Matt Hughes at that time was honestly viewed as Fedor is now.

Fans worldwide thought this was a huge mistake and there were threads on sherdog with titles such as 'RIP BJ' etc

What happened is the equivalent of Chuck Liddell moving to HW and dominating Fedor. It was unfathomable.

Like man vs boy, Bang was dominated and BJ Penn cemented his status as the P4P king.

When Penn announced he was moving up to MW to fight him people honest to god thought he was crazy.

His next move was to crazy even for him. I remember when it was announced he moving to HW to fight undefeated sensation Machida there were people saying they were going to stop being fans of his because he was too ir-rational.

Think about it. Machida has dominated everybody he has fought, including brutal stoppages of Bonnar and Franklin, he is currently considered the biggest prospect in the LHW division.

ok. i have said it before and ill say it again. i think bj penn is overated (now. he was great before he left). im not saying bj penn is out of his prime but i dont think he is as good as he was. i also think you guys are hyping him up WAY to much. yes he is skilled but he needs to condtition himself better. and then he will get back to his winning ways.
