he is known as the prodigy. you cant have potential forever. maybe he has become the best he can be. maybe that is why people of the past three years have only seen his losses to big name guys. like hughes and st. pierre and if you consider him a big name machida. the prodigy tag needs to be dropped and maybe we need to realize that he is only above average and that his skills are no longer as big as his name.

As much as he is gonna lose to Pulver, he is a top talent in two different weight classes, regardless of who has the belt.

Great post. Very informative, and aside from the Penn-inflating comments following each heading, very (imo) accurate and objective.

I can, however, understand why some people think he's overrated; they weren't there, like you said, when he did these incredible things. They didn't get to experience the emotional high of watching him take a supposedly great fighter down a few notches. So they deserve to be forgiven, because it's very, very difficult to illustrate how big of a deal a fight was in the past to someone who wasn't there when it happened--probably like, years from now, new fans won't entirely understand the significance of the Randy/Sylvia fight. You have, however, illustrated Penn's significance about as well as could be done in text/words, so in that regard, you're aces in my book.

But I dont think your really pointing out how big his win over hughes was.
The WW divisionin the ufc is considered the deepest division in mma right now.

Matt hughes had beaten everyone there was to face in his weight class at that point.
Here is a example about how a win over hughes(the pride nutthggers are gonna go insane) means more then a win over fedor.

Who is widely considerd fedors biggest win... If we all dont make excuses everyone will say it was cro cop beyond a shadow of a doubt when he(cro cop) came into the ufc and right after cro cop
won the grand prix. It was the big HW match up everyone wanted to see. Fedor still hasnt beaton everyone in his division, he's beaten everyone that was a star in pride and with the way herring and cro cop have been preforming latley, its made me doubt how great that division really was.

Now who is matt hughes greatest win over ever?
See my point? You could argue that forever because he has beaten everyone in what is considered the toughtest division in mma by many people.

and bj beat him in the first round on the ground were hughes is a expert.
and Hughes in return beat him in the rematch....

Penn might have beaten Hughes in their first match but he could not and will not ever have a run like Hughes had and beat all the people that Hughes did beat....
