Good post, but take it for when it was written... following the post, Penn was kicked out of WW by GSP and the second Hughes fight and proceeded to start cleaning out LW. Tried to pull another jump in weight to take on GSP again and we all know how that went.

But then, I'm not one of those people who's ever said that BJ Penn is overrated. I still had a lump in my throat going into UFC 94. I was shocked at how lopsided that fight was. He's one of the best fighters in MMA. Call it immature, but every last problem I have with BJ stems from issues outside the ring, and his jump to K-1 (after being told that he couldn't) just speaks to the fact that he's always been the same brash and unreasonable personality... he just had a lot less trouble backing it up before. And now that he's starting to lose outside of his natural weight class (Hughes once, GSP twice), it doesn't give me much "respect" for him that he's grasping at straws for reasons why he's lost.

BJ Penn is not overrated as a fighter. In fact, right now, he's probably very underrated. But this thread, titled "Why BJ Penn is so respected", takes on a whole new meaning 2 years after it was created.

Can you honestly say his current ranking in the LW division is based on actual accomplishments in the LW division?

He has all the talent in the world but has spent most of his time pissing it away.. Wich to me is also pissing on the fans and the sport..

He hasn´t defended his belt for over a year, and hasn´t fought at LW in over a year, disrespecting the entire LW division. In fact he shouldn´t be ranked at LW at all (1 year inactivity)

Sure he won the mundials, big woop. What has that translated into in MMA terms. 4 standard RNC and 1 triangle. Amazing..

The way he takes a loss. Always a million excuses. Telling mommy, seriously?

I would respect him a lot more if he stayed at lightweight, showed up for every fight in great shape and dominated the division.. So he would actually prove he is that good, not just live on nuthuggery, percieved skill and winning the mundials oh so many years ago, and fights that happened 6 years ago.

good post i agree, i have a couple friend who are some what new to the sport , and i have had several of them in recent weeks ask me" whats the big deal about BJ, i dont think he is that good" ,and it always ends up being about an hour long discussion ending with us watching , several of bj's fights on line,, and me explaining several of the points , discussed in the original post, and my friends saying ohhhh i c , i for one have always respected BJ's skill , in the earlier years i did'nt like him very much , but after his lets say re dedication, to the spot, i not only respect him but he has made me a BJ' Penn fan...
