The the TS, that's the best argument I've ever read to explain why Penn is considered by some to be one of the greatest. This is the kind of response i was hoping to get from my thread.
I still have to say that I think Penn is overrated, not that he's a bad fighter, but that a few big wins doesn't make you a legend. Most of the fighters he fought early on have gone on to show themselves as not truly elite level fighters. If he beat fighters who were thought to be top guys, but who turned out to have lackluster records then it does diminish the quality of those wins.
but more importantly, he hasn't managed to come up with a big win outside of Sherk in several years. His constant shifts upward in weight class show him to be a warrior at heart, but his subsequent losses at those weights just goes to show that he isn't a p4p great.
he was a top LW years ago, and he's a top 5 lw now, but he hasn't beaten nearly enough top level fighters within the past 5 years to be considered so highly.
