BJ Penn rocks, I dont care if he has 2 losses in a row. He had the first two rounds in each fight, he only lost to Hughes cause of the injury. I still dont know what to say about him and that decision win for GSP however

Never once have i doubted BJ's skill I think he has the absoloute more raw talent out of any fighter in the world. Theonly thing that upsets me is that he doesn't usually come into a fight in great shape anymore like he used to. If he trained his conditioning he would of beaten Hughes and would be WW champ to set up a Penn-GSP II and though Im a huge GSP fan i think it could ahve gone either way.

As others have said, excellent original post. There will always be detractors, and there will always be diehard fans; however, true fight fans can see that BJ Penn is a GREAT fighter, and will always be known as such (if you don't, I pity you and pray for your death).

Excellent thread. A couple years I personally went through all fights on UFCs 43 - 51 on DVD, and watched the BJ/Hughes fight. Before ever knowing the outcome, I thought, "This Penn guy is crazy to be going up in weight to fight Hughes".

Then he beats him. I thought it was a "fluke".

After that, I heard all these people talking about how great BJ Penn is, and it made me sick. Whenever I hear people raving like that, I look for every little thing I can to downplay a fighter.

My dad is pretty hooked on MMA. He and I were talking on the phone prior to the BJ/GSP fight, and he was getting excited to see BJ. He had watched Penn put the hurt on some people on "Unleashed", and he was anxious to see him fighting again.

I had my dad come over to watch the GSP/Penn fight. Keep in mind, we were both sitting there and basically saying, "OK Penn, let's see what the buzz is about".

I gotta tell you, after that fight, I can't help but agree that Penn is elite. People sometimes put too much emphasis on win/lose and attitude. BJ Penn is on another level. Who the hell have you ever seen jumping over low kicks/foot sweeps? The man went on an 8-month layoff before stepping up to fight GSP for his return bout to the Octagon...who the hell does that?

Imagine my excitement when I found out the replacement for GSP was Penn at UFC 63.

I tell ya, I'm a big enough fan of Penn to make him a star of Holes of Glory. It's rare for fighters to get that honor.

Good post, bruddah.

At first I thought, "damned, another fricken dissertation". Then I read the first few responses. So I decided to sack up and read it. My mans, good job. Good depth on describing the scenarios w/ the fighters going into their fights w/ BJ. Solid demonstration of research and writing it in a manner digestible even to Sherdog lugs. I've been off and on w/ BJ myself as far as being a fan. Can't wait for the TUF 5 finale fight between he and Pulver! Just looking forward to a good beef!

As long as he doesn't gas and or hurt his rib.....(cough cough)

But seriously, Penn by TKO.

Just wanted to say thanks to the OP.

BJ rnc win over Matt Hughes is still hands down my most favourite moment in MMA history.
