Excellent thread. A couple years I personally went through all fights on UFCs 43 - 51 on DVD, and watched the BJ/Hughes fight. Before ever knowing the outcome, I thought, "This Penn guy is crazy to be going up in weight to fight Hughes".
Then he beats him. I thought it was a "fluke".
After that, I heard all these people talking about how great BJ Penn is, and it made me sick. Whenever I hear people raving like that, I look for every little thing I can to downplay a fighter.
My dad is pretty hooked on MMA. He and I were talking on the phone prior to the BJ/GSP fight, and he was getting excited to see BJ. He had watched Penn put the hurt on some people on "Unleashed", and he was anxious to see him fighting again.
I had my dad come over to watch the GSP/Penn fight. Keep in mind, we were both sitting there and basically saying, "OK Penn, let's see what the buzz is about".
I gotta tell you, after that fight, I can't help but agree that Penn is elite. People sometimes put too much emphasis on win/lose and attitude. BJ Penn is on another level. Who the hell have you ever seen jumping over low kicks/foot sweeps? The man went on an 8-month layoff before stepping up to fight GSP for his return bout to the Octagon...who the hell does that?
Imagine my excitement when I found out the replacement for GSP was Penn at UFC 63.
I tell ya, I'm a big enough fan of Penn to make him a star of Holes of Glory. It's rare for fighters to get that honor.
